my baby boy is 5 weeks old tomorrow and today he has started having darkish green stools! i've read that it can be to do with not getting enough milk but his weight is great (he put on 9oz in the last week!) so i think he is getting enough! i am exclusively breastfeeding.

the stools are the same texture as before it's just the colour has changed and i don't know wether i should be worried!

i'm a first time parent and do worry about everything! any advise please???

I just had this same thing hasten with my almost 5 week old daughter. Here is Mr experience:
Dd is just over a month and has had green poos for about two weeks. According to the HV, the green poos could indicate an allergy, but she would expect other symptoms as well (not great weight gain, fussing when eating, general discomfort, others that I can't remember). Dd is gaining weight great and is showing no other signs of discomfort when feeding, but HV recommended I see a GP anyway just in case. After lots more questions and checking Dds heart rate, GP was satisfied that there was no problem, and the green was just her system adjusting to the outside world. She told me to come back if I saw blood in the stool, Dd was vomiting a lot, or if the aforementioned issues with feeding and weight gain occurred.

So, it could easily be nothing, but you should still mention to the HV and maybe see a GP.

Lol, I meant here is MY experience.

Dd also breastfeed.

I breastfed my son for 22 months and a friend is a lactation consultant. Green poos often means lots of sugar from the fore milk of the feed. Possibly tongue tie as they are not finishing the feed on each breast to get the fattier less sugary milk.

My son had lots of green poos, eventually it settled (possibly adjusted or tongue snip helped) and def no allergies where my son was concerned.

Massive amounts of regular mucus or blood are more concerning.

I bf my two DC. They both had green poo, sometimes just as a one off, sometimes got a day or two. The health visitor told me it was completely normal but if it carried on more than a couple of days to ask for advice and that it is normally a sign they are slightly under the weather.

If they seemed otherwise well, one day of green poo would not worry me at all.

Happened to my second.

Please please please don't assume he's not getting enough milk. It is listed by doctor google as one of the causes but isn't necessarily that. The old test goes: if your baby is happy, gaining weight and doing plenty of wet and dirty nappies in all likelihood all is fine.

Some of my DD's were the most extraordinary green. It lasted a week or two on and off and didn't happen again.

I also believe it's too much foremilk. This happened to my DS as I was changing sides too quickly.
