Aptimal vs Hipp Organic

Hi, i have a 4 week old girl, currently we are using cow and gate milk, out girl seems to regularly have a painful stomach so we was wanting to give another formula a try.

We have narrowed it down to Aptimal and Hipp Organic, from what i have read Hipp Organic seems to get better reviews, but what do people think?

Also, has hipp organic got as much nutrition as aptimal, like for like? i read that aptimal is dearer because its ingredients are more pure?

It’s hard to choose when you don’t want to keep changing the food and try and stick to one, i think I’m slightly swayed to hipp but not sure.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

James

Aptamil is made by the same manufacturer as cow and gate. It has a very good marketing team too if you think it is more 'pure'! They are strictly regulated in what nutrients they need to contain so use the one that best suits your baby

We started out using Cow & Gate but our baby had terrible reflux so before trying other treatments we changed to Aptamil which saw a slight improvement. Our HV then said she'd heard of a few people having success with Hipp so we tried it and after two days - different baby!

A few negatives though. It's not as widely available, not sure if that's just where we live but we can't just pop into our nearest supermarket, always had to go to one of the bigger ones. I just started ordering in bulk from their website which was better. Also, the container is not as good as the others. There's two foil packs in each box and I found it really difficult to use the leveller without losing half the formula down in between the box and the foil. You can buy a plastic formula tub on their website which did help but was annoying to have to do that!

Aptamil is just cow and gate with a higher price tag and glitzy marketing. To be honest, just pick one you can buy easily wherever you normally shop and that you can afford to stick with. Aptamil is obviously more expensive than C&G and Hipp is even more than that. We initially tried to switch from C&G to Hipp and my dd had an awful reaction to it. She went from being fine to crying in pain and projectile vomiting after every feed. Hipp is supposed to be ‘gentle’ but it definitely didn’t work for us. After a week we switched back to Cow and Gate and that worked great for us. Basically just try something different and see what works. Don’t assume more expensive is better as there’s no evidence to support that. All formula is by law pretty much the same, but some babies just do better with one brand over another.

My health visitor advised that Aptimel, SMA and Cow and Gate are all made in the same factory by the same people... whereas HIPP isn't. We occasionally use HIPP as a top up or if I haven't been able to express enough for the night feed (we have latch issues so we're still finding our way with breastfeeding). In the hospital DS was given a very small amount of SMA, however when we tried to give SMA at home he threw it up both times so we switched to HIPP and have to say he keeps it down fine and took to it much better. Health visitor also advised that giving it as the ready made carton rather than buying the powdered version is better for their digestion. Hope that helps!

Disagree with whoever said Hipp is more expensive. It’s only £8.50 so actually a bit cheaper!

OP, we felt terrible at first as we changed our daughters milk three times in three weeks - four times if you include the fact I had to stop bf - but actually it didn’t matter as we found one that worked and never looked back. You just have to find what works for you.

Yes aptamil and cow and gate are almost identical except for marketing budgets and therefore price.

My fussy 2nd son settled with Hipp but as previous posters said it's not so widely available.
If they usually sell it in your local shop then fine but not all supermarkets stock it. If you go on holiday abroad you'd probably have to take enough with you.

Frazzled2207 · 28/11/2017 20:02

Oh yes the hipp packaging is crap but I ended up using an old aptamil container (shoot me)

dementedpixie · 28/11/2017 20:03

SMA is made by Nestlé whereas cow and gate and aptamil are Danone brands so will not all be made in the same factory! They will all be similar as baby milks are regulated

HariboBrenshnio · 28/11/2017 20:14

HIPP is cheaper because it contains less formula, the box is a fair bit smaller. so overall it ends up costing more.

Saying that, I switched from C&G to Hipp after reading Aptimal was made by the same people as C&G. My little girl got on really well with it. It has probiotics in it which I think helped settle her tummy.

Clarabell100 · 29/11/2017 16:52

Not really @haribo

Aptamil contains 900g at £11 so £1.22 per 100g and Hipp is 800g at £8.50 so £1.06 per 100g.

But I don't think the OP should base any decision on cost, whatever works for the baby is best.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/11/2017 16:56

They're all as good nutrition wise as each other. If you find one that your baby prefers then that's the best one. Consider different teats as well such as slow flow ones.

Helloisitmeoryou · 29/11/2017 17:00

Highly rate hipp. First baby on cow and gate had lots of tummy problems, second baby on hipp, no problems whatsoever.

RidingMyBike · 29/11/2017 17:13

We were told at the hospital that Aptamil and Cow and Gate were made in same factory and no difference between them.

We used Aptamil (DD had Cow and Gate in SCBU when my own milk hadn't come in) for 2-3 feeds per day. Looked at the Hipp and liked the idea of it being organic but it was only available at one place locally and half the time they didn't have it in stock. Couldn't stock up as only allowed to buy two tubs at a time. So Aptamil it was as couldn't risk not being able to get it.
