Mother's Diet Affecting Breast Milk?

My DD is ten days old. She's breast fed. But she's so uncomfortable - very windy and vomits a lot. I didn't have any of this with DS.

I'm wondering if my diet can affect my milk. For some reason, I'm guzzling cow's milk like nobody's business. I really crave it. But now I'm wondering if this could be irritating her?

Is there any information on certain food groups affecting breast milk?

If there is a history of cows milk intolerence then it coulfd be affecting the baby, if not then maybe you just have a windy one!!!

Not sure about conclusive evidence with regard to curries, garlic etc. I do know that allergens can penetrate the breastmilk and affect a baby. My ds2 was very colicky, smelly wind, skin rashes and so on. It turned out he was allergic to a number of things including peanuts and I was eating them quite regularly.

She could be just a colicky baby or even have a little reflux. Perhaps cut back on the milk you are drinking and keep a diary to see if you notice any changes. If not make an appointment with your dr to check for other things. hth

No, no history of dairy intolerance.

Poor little soul - she wriggles and shuffles, moans and groans for ages before her burp comes up. How old do they need winding for?

I do have one child already but as he wasn't at all windy (unless I was neglecting him!), I don't have any idea about this kind of thing.

Babies often burp and trump alot anyway!!!

Hi there

DS (3 months old tomorrow)was like this.He is bf bar one bottle of formula daily. He was so bad at the beginning that we couldn't sleep with him in the room as even when he was deeply asleep he grunted and screeched so much! He has improved a lot and has been in our room since about six weeks, before that we took turns to sleep with him in lounge. Infacol seems to help in getting the wind up although sometimes he will actually cry really hard for a few minutes before bringing up a large burp. He is also sick alot - not normally massive amounts but repeatedly - at least he has stopped doing it through his nose! It has improved a lot but we do go through many bibs and muslins per day. He has also had a number of sessions of cranial osteopathy. I cut almost everyting out of my diet and I don't think it made much difference.

mine was like this too - tried everything including cranial and the only thing that made a really big difference was changes in my diet. Cow's milk protein is the most likely culprit, according to my paed. She reccommended cutting out just milk, and if that doesn't work, all dairy for 3 months. It can take up to 4 weeks to clear up, apparently, but mine got better really quickly.

loopy - shame for your friend, she was badly advised. Lactose is present in breastmilk, and will not be affected one way or the other by the diet of the mum. If things improved, it's coincidence, surely.

Have you taken her to a cranio sacral therapist? It can really help with windy babies. Also..... does she have reflux? How much is she vomiting?
