Is this just wind??

I have a six week old baby and from week 3 she has been having these 'wind attacks' where she will cry/shrek turn purple, kick legs and only calms down after she has pooed a few times - they can last up to an hour and happen now maybe 3 times a day (random times). She is being breast fed and the attacks don't thankfully happen during the night. I have mentioned it to health visitor etc who say its just wind and nothing that can be done but its driving us mad and I am sure it can't be normal. Does it sound like trapped wind? She isn't a big burper and hard to get her to burp after a feed. We are giving her infacoil but don't think it makes any difference. We have also been to a cranial oestopath twice but that just seems to make the attacks worse the next day. All advice welcome as we are slowly going insane. Thank you

Weston,very common am afraid.
Call it wind or colic,it does strike with horrid regularity.
You've just got to grin and bear it.
Infacol did nothing for my baby but cranila osteopath did so I would persist.
Also try bouncing tummy down over knee and rubbing back.

It's grim,really sympathise.

weston sorry to hear about your dd. Mine was the same at that age. Try to keep her upright after a feed, prop the head end of her cot or basket up (eg put the legs on books), and try anti-colic baby massage moves on her tumm - and always wind her no matter how long it takes. These things worked really well for my dd until she grew out of it by around 3.5 months. we too tried infacol which did bugger all, also in desperation used gripe water which I was convinced did help to release trapped wind / poo when she was really bad. Don't forget this is just a phase! It will end. Good Luck!

amidaiwish · 14/04/2007 10:49

definitely gripe water
there are some good threads on here about winding positions if you do a search

amidaiwish · 14/04/2007 10:50

oh and these are really good for propping up a cot (if she is in a cot yet) blocks

also cut out caffeine and alcohol totally from your diet. that really made a difference with mine who were both like that at this age. try fennel tea too.

and as others have said, it does pass.

moondog · 14/04/2007 10:53

I found cutting stuff out of diet didn't help at all.
Frankly, when dealing with newborn and breastfeeding and recovering from birth,a restricted diet would have made me want to shoot myself.

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/04/2007 10:56

Is she pooing a lot of times each day weston? If so (and even if not, in fact!), then it's possible that dairy in your diet could be aggravating her. I would cut it down or out and see if it causes an improvement.

You could also try colief, which does work for lots of people, although not for us as dd did turn out to be milk intolerant. You would need to express onto a teaspoon and mix it with the colief to give before a feed.

weston · 14/04/2007 11:07

thanks for all your replies, good to know at least that it is normal and to remember that is a phase...repeat to self...

her poo's seem to be decreasing (which i think is normal as they get older?) to maybe maybe 4 a day from about 8 but we tend to when she is having 'an attack' force them along by putting her over our knee

i don't drink milk, did try cutting chocolate out of diet but didnt' make a big difference to me and alot to me!!

am tempted to try formula but imagine that will just make it even worse?

Formula won't help with colic, and usually makes it worse because baby takes in more air from a bottle than from a breast.

moondog · 14/04/2007 11:20

Why tempted to try formula i wonder?

weston · 14/04/2007 11:23

in case its something in my milk that she is reacting to maybe..not sure..after weeks of good weight gain she hadn't put on any weight last week so is now doing (in day) nearly 30 mins (previously she just did 10 mins a time) every 2 hours so feeling a too milk machine like..plus she has a cold and i have flu! think its just a bad week!!

It is hard work in the first few weeks even without all the horrid colicky stuff and believe me it would be hard whatever you fed her.

You need to have faith in yourself and keep reminding yourself that your made for purpose, fresh, light and easily digestible breastmilk is the best thing in the world for her.

Be kind to yourself, set up a little feeding station (comfy chair, footstool, pillows, magazines, remote control) and remind yourself that caring for the baby is a huge job.Delegate the rst and once you have finished feeding, find a loving relative to do the walking and cudlling.

Weston, I really sympathize, it does pass but absolutely grim in the meantime I know. Just wanted to say that someone I met recently was using Infacol but 20 mins before the actual feed - she said this worked whereas giving it immediately before wasn't so good. In the same discussion there were quite a few votes for Colief too. We used Infacol at the highest dose (2 droppers-full), plus massage, and also found laying DD on her side with knees bent helped. The worst week was when I went to stay at my parents and they spoilt me with good dinners and wine every day - turned out that the wine was a real wind-trigger!
