When and how to drop 2.30 a.m. feed?

DS 11 weeks (corrected age 6 wks), currntly F-fed 4 hourly (2.30, 6.30, 10.30 x2). Colicky on and off 24/7 so unsettled between all feeds (usually peaking around 2 hours after each feed). Post-10.30 p.m. feed, settles til about 1 a.m. then cries on and off until 2.30 a.m. when fed. Is obviously uncomfortable with trapped wind, and actually don't think he is waking/crying with hunger but with the wind problems. Don't know when/how to start thinking about dropping the 2.30 a.m. feed - given that the usual advice i.e. "when they sleep through, they don't need it any more" isn't applicable to DS; he isn't anywhere close to sleeping through but I'm just not sure that he needs the feed. He does take the feed, but again, not sure if it's just the cuddling / sucking that he likes and that settles him. Also, not sure whether to just try to get him to go from 10.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. all in one go (seems optimistic), or to slowly reduce the amount we give him at 2.30 a.m., or to gradually move the 2.30 a.m. feed later and later - but if you do that, do you still give the 6.30 a.m. feed at the same time or do you move that one as well?

I really don't want to tell you what you probably already know (and are doing) but my DS suffers with trapped wind, we use Infacol, not sure if it works but I think it has helped. Someone once recommended 'Colief' (think that is how you spell). It is quite expensive though.
Also, we make sure we persevere with trying to get the wind up, although he is usually quite sick. It takes us approx 15-20 mins to wind him completely after each feed. He has slept throught he night (7pm-7am -ish) since about 13-14 wks but during the day he is a nightmare with wind. I think some babies just are. Hugs to you though cos it is awful, I just feel so sorry for the litlle mites x

Also meant to say that if he is settled and has got all his wind up, he may then sleep for a bit longer.

My friend got 'Colief' on prescription but my GP wouldn't give me it

6 weeks is very soon to expect an unbroken night , if he was 5 weeks prem, he really needs to feed as often as he wants to...he;ll drop the feed when he is ready

make sure he is winded, gentle massage of tummy, and bicycling of the legs can help move trapped wind, or lay baby over your knee for gentle pressure

don;t hurry him off his milk, he needs to feed often ! x

My ds was 6 weeks prem and didn't drop the middle of the night feed until he was about 5 months old, but all babies are different. I think these little ones need night feeds for a bit longer. Have you checked out the bliss (prem baby website) message board? It is a mine of information about prems!

THanks all. We are doing all the usual thngs for the colic (Infacol, osteopathy, extended burping sessions, anti colic teats etc). Sounds like we should give it a bit more time. Had not heard of the Bliss sit but will look it up...

I bf so don't really know the answer but 11 wks is young to expect to sleep through! If he takes the milk at 2.30 then is probably hungry.
