I have a 4 week old DS and am considering making the transition from BF. I am suffering from hyperlactation (oversupply) and have tried all solutions but unfortunately it is making both BF for me and my DS very uncomfortable.

Is it possible to combine pumping and formula and gradually make the transition onto formula? If so, please can you share tips on how to do this please? I don't want to solely pump but would still like to continue giving him breast milk too for a little longer.

Please no comments about carrying on BF and managing hyperlactation as that is not what I am here for Flowers

Thank you Smile

Sorry you have had a difficult start to bf :(

Yes, it is possible to combine pumping and formula - many people do this.

However, you will need to manage your over supply, whether you pump or not.....going over to pumping with no direct bf will not resolve your over supply of itself.

But you say you don't want to manage it, so I am a bit reluctant to chip in!

Give a bit more info, if you can :)

Its always possible to combine feed in anyway that works for you and your family. Most people are concerned about protecting their BF supply when introducing formula but sounds like you might not need to worry!

I'm by no means an expert but when transitioning to formula/combi it is usually suggested to replace one feed of the day for a few days/1 week until your supply catches up and basically stops producing the milk for that feed... to avoid engorgement you will need to pump instead of giving that feed.

So you could pump whilst someone else gives one formula feed or expressed feed. Gradually reducing the length of time that you pump for that feed should start to "teach" your body to produce less and less milk hopefully to the point where you wouldn't need to pump for that feed (if that's what your aim is).

You can then replace another feed with formula or expressed milk and repeat the process.
