How about nighttime public information-type progs about bfeeding?

Made by Tiktok and Mears, preferably.

I was trying to think of a way to get bfing info to the masses in a way that would mean that women doing night feeds could watch it and be encouraged, or it could be recorded, or a DVD of the whole series could be given to women antenatally or something?

I thought if it was on TV, more people would watch it - people who were ttc, people who were supporting a woman in their family who'd just had a baby, maybe? But a DVD as well for women who are pg.

or even just TV adverts rather than whole programmes?
appreciate this would mostly raise consciousness rather than give help and advice though

Elasticwoman · 05/04/2007 10:58

It would be better if more bf were done in public places. In Tesco's cafe the other day I saw a notice saying they would heat baby bottles/food, but no You May Breastfeed Here notices. Not that they should be necessary.

I sometimes think bf is a well kept secret.

fishie · 05/04/2007 11:04

yes a nice little snippet series of 5 min progs on mainstream tv could be really nice. and maybe a longer proper series on one of those wretched baby channels i was glued to during preg.

MrsBadger · 05/04/2007 11:08

oh yes, 5min snippets like the arty ones you sometimes get on C4

and those wretched interactive flatscreen TVs in Tesco etc could show them too

hunkermunker · 05/04/2007 11:15

Elasticwoman, yes, that too. But this as well, not instead of public bfeeding.

It might help if C4 stopped advertising formula - against the spirit of the WHO code if not the letter of the law. I wrote to Tessa Jowell about it when she was a health minister back in the 90s and she refused to understand my point so I gave up.

a series on one of those home and health channels that all pregnant women watch. following women learning to breastfeed etc. they have a few seies about bringing baby home, but the breastfeeding is only shown for a few moments, not shown to be the biggest thing the mum's doing, the thing that takes up most of her time.

hunkermunker · 05/04/2007 13:40

Yes, on Discovery Health too - but on the BBC in the middle of the night - part of Learning Zone or whatever it's called - to make it more mainstream.

BizzyDint · 05/04/2007 13:45

yes, i think it's a great idea hunker.

but i do think some decent programming on the home and health channels would be good too. every pregnant woman i've met sat and watched all those series..student midwives, maternity ward, mum+one, three births nine babies, bringing baby home, pregnant women love it. add in a series focussing on women breastfeeding, following them from antenatal to baby being 6 months and more...featuring tiktok giving fab support/advice etc...and you're sorted.

hunkermunker · 05/04/2007 13:47

It would need to be somebody who was utterly current and fab at getting their point across (so Tiktok and Mears ) - not some mad bint HV who talks about bathing your nipples in salt water before each feed or some maddism.

BizzyDint · 05/04/2007 13:48

i wonder how the learning zone idea would be in reality. i'm thinking it might be a it mechanical, a bit sciencey. not necessarily a bad thing.. but new mums like to see other new mums they feel they can realet to. i dunno, just thinking how it would be.

hunkermunker · 05/04/2007 13:54

I agree, it might be a bit clunky and sciency, but not done properly it wouldn't.

OP posts:
BizzyDint · 05/04/2007 13:55

don't you work for the bbc?

hunkermunker · 05/04/2007 13:56

Not any more Used to though.

ah.

IlanaK · 05/04/2007 14:13

If you all feel strongly about the advertsiing of formula on tv (and elsewhere) then please visit this website: Join the Breastfeeding Coalition

AS the the tv snippets, the DoH is planning an ad campaign (of the public annoucement types) soon.

glassslipper · 05/04/2007 15:04

ntl have a programme about breastfeeding on their ondemand programmes. i watched it the other day in the night.

3easterbunniesandnomore · 05/04/2007 15:26

Ilana thanks for the link

hunkermunker · 05/04/2007 15:29

Ooh, do they, GS? I don't have NTL - what was the prog called, can you remember?

Ilanak, have signed the BM - amazing document and very happy to support it. Will email it to my MP, I think.

glassslipper · 05/04/2007 16:16

erm. right. DD is watching lazytown at the moment so i cant check but from memory, you go to 'ondemand' and then it is in a section which looks really dull. lol.

i will check in a bit and let you know.

glassslipper · 05/04/2007 16:21

It was - ntl ondemand > 6. more tv > 5. the baby channel > 2. 'breastfeeding'

It was ok actually, although i have to confess i fell asleep part way through

hunkermunker · 05/04/2007 16:42

Cool - will see if I can find someone with NTL and watch it Thank you!
