"he'll get a taste for alcohol" ???

The other night my dad came round for dinner and I had a glass of wine with our meal - he said oh no, you mustn't do that,he'll get a taste for it in the milk and could have a drink problem later in life. I told him that was ridiculous but it's been playing on my mind. Could drinking while breastfeeding make my lovely DS become an alcoholic???

He really said that????

Im no expert, but I think that there would have to be more contributing factors to make someone an alcoholic.

I dont think you should drink too much while breastfeeding, but cant see how how one glass of wine with a meal can potentially go on to make an infant and alcoholic in later life.

Utter and complete b*llocks.

Why can't people allow bf women to live a normal life?

There is no evidence for this, and no biologically plausible reason for it to happen, either.

magnolia1 · 04/04/2007 09:14

Oh dear, If that was the case I will be raising 5 alcoholics

millysimmons · 04/04/2007 09:22

Rubbish. it takes more than that to make someone an alcoholic & have been told by BFc a social drink is OK.
Another myth that is stopping many mothers BFing. ARgh.

Bollocks.

My fav thing to do w/DD2 was sit down with a large glass of wine of an evening and feed her.

Laura032004 · 04/04/2007 09:30

My mum drank whilst bf (not heavily, but the odd unit here and there - advised by MW to have a glass of wine in the evening to help settle me! ), and I'm certainly not an alcoholic. I've nigh on given up alcohol since TTC DS1 in December 2003. Probably had less than 30 units since then.

Absolute bucket of poooooooooo

take no notice

What is this rubbish about alcohol and BF - don't they realise that this is far better than bottlefeeding. If it was pushed that women can eat and drink anything when BFing the rates would be much better - had a curry last night washed down with a glass of cider, my 5 month old daughter is fine with it. These myths are so unhelpful.

OrmIrian · 04/04/2007 11:53

Things like this really don't help with bfing rates. I've lost count of the number of women who say 'they want their body back' as a reason for not bfing. Which sounds selfish on the face of it but when they clearly think it means that they shouldn't drink any alcohol, coffee, eat spicey food, eat too many tomatoes/strawberries etc etc you can see what they mean. Breast-feeding is a stage that a woman goes through whilst rearing a child - it's not a medicalised state that needs special treatment. Excess of anything should be avoided.
