Quick help with BLW - 6 months

My son is nearly 6.5 months old. Started weaning with purees at 5.5 months (had my reasons) initially he took to it like a dream. Ate everything with gusto and wanted more even after it was gone. Great. Except the last two to three days he's been a bit reluctant and not wanting us to feed him. Last night I ended up giving him blueberry wafers (for babies!) To feed himself and he wolfed it down. This morning, tried with him porridge with pear and blueberry puree (normally he loooooves it) but wouldn't entertain it until we gave him the spoon to 'feed' himself.

So, I'm not looking at trying some BLW. I did give him some banana last week which he loved sucking on but suddenly he started fidgeting and gagging then brought a big lunmp up. It scared me so I'm reluctant to try BLW but it seems to wants to feed himself.

Should I just try him with finger food? If so, where do I start? If I give him bread (as is or lightly toasted??) Do i give it in long thin slices or little squares.

Can I give egg, if so, how? Boiled and chopped up or scrambled?

I may try him on some broccoli and Apple at lunch (I know to cook these until soft) but at a loss beyond that.

I'm going out this morning to can pick things up for him to try.

Toast is good- better than bread I found as that kind of gummed up into a mush. I put a little butter on to avoid it being too dry and then cut it into fingers.
Egg- I did a kind of scrambled egg / omelette and sliced it for her to try.
Maybe avocado, sweet potato (I oven cooked them in wedges?
Gagging is a good skill to have! It's hard to watch but it means his mouth and throat are working as they should.
Good luck :-)

Gagging is very different to choking and is perfectly normal. If you are worried about choking I'd make sure you know what to do if LO does choke as they can just as easily choke on purees. Have a read of this which explains it better than I could Smile

As for what to give him, at this age he only really needs solids once or twice a day. What are you having for lunch and dinner?

And whilst you're out today, maybe have a look to see if your library has either this book or this one.

Thanks for the tips! Tried him with steamed broccoli, carrot and Apple and also some lightly toasted bread. He loved it, especially the broccoli.

He's taken to weaning to well initially that I think it's just thrown me. I just need to go with the flow and experiment a bit. I'm going to try dipping his carrot in the puree, and giving him the spoon as well over the next few days, see how he gets on.

As you can tell, I'm a FTM so this is all new to me Smile

Broccoli is great because it's easy to pick up as the stalk is an inbuilt handle. DD liked fingers of potato, parsnip, apple, bananas, mackerel, bread sticks, strips of meat. We didn't have too many issues with mess/throwing of food or bowl, and it worked really well for us. Smile

Gagging is a good sign - he's working out his limits and dealing with something a bit too big in the way that he's meant to. It's all part of the learning process.

He can have anything you're having that isn't too salty or processed. Toast, pasta, fruit and veg pieces, dry cereal, anything. Strips of omelette are good as are chunks of meat and fish. It works fine just to put a little of whatever you're having out for them, if necessary cut into decent-sized chunks for baby handling.

Cheese batons at room temp. they go quite creamy.
Fusilli pasta cooked well so that it's quite soft.
Steamed veg.
Toast with just butter, or mashed avacado/cream cheese/humous etc.
Stick an apple in the microwave to soften it (pierce skin first!) & give the flesh.
Satsumas - check for pips.
Cucumber.
Homemade fish cakes (potato, tuna/salmon etc)
Red pepper.
Bread sticks.
Pizza to gum on.

I was advised to avoid giving popcorn & baked beans.
