Quick poll: Is this a good place for a nescafe ad?

Never buy nestle products myself, but I accept that other people do not share my concerns.
Nevertheless, I have to say I was very disappointed to see a nescafe ad in the "breast and bottle feeding" section, of all places. Yeas, I know thge sirte has to earn its keep.... but couldn't the ad go elsewhere? Or is it just me?

There are a lot of people on MN who boycott Nestle because of their marketing techniques in the third world. I had a sharp intake of breath when I saw it as well, I was very disappointed to see it here.

hunkermunker · 02/04/2007 14:36

Not appropriate, IMO.

beansprout · 02/04/2007 14:41

Not good.

Littlefish · 02/04/2007 14:44

Agree - not appropriate.

Ladymuck · 02/04/2007 14:49

Where?

yaddayah · 01/05/2007 16:08

i've just seen this ad again on MN homepage ..am i being daft but are nescafe and nesle the same company, and if so why is it still there?

krabbiepatty · 01/05/2007 16:09

Has anyone reported to MN HQ?- I think they said they did not accept Nestle ads so thsi may well be an error.

Cappuccino · 01/05/2007 16:16

Absolutely not

Us Mumsnetters are all so dim that we cannot decide for ourselves what is a good thing to buy and what isn't

It is also important that they don't take advertisements for crack cocaine and suicide pills or we would be all down the shops clamouring for them

krabbiepatty · 01/05/2007 16:18

I dunno Cappucino, just because we can decide not to buy the crack cocaine doesn't make it a good thing for MN to be making money from the maunfacture of crack cocaine. They do have a policy of not taking ads from some of the more offensive sources.

krabbiepatty · 01/05/2007 16:19

"manufacture"

yaddayah · 01/05/2007 16:22

i'm not opposed to any forms of advertising tbh, i just do remember Justine saying they have a list of companies they won't allow on so was gobsmacked to see it pop up again

Ladymuck · 01/05/2007 16:23

But if some MNers are boycotting the company then presumably they'd end up having to boycott MN if MN are promoting Nestle products. But I suspect that it is unintentional by MNHQ - they do have a no Nestle policy. It is not a matter of not buying something that is bad for you - it is the promotion of a company who uses unethical methods.

Personally I have always felt that the Nestle boycott was never going to work as Nestle has so many products/brands and the UK is one market out of many of theirs. If you really wanted to hit Nestle then imo you have to target someone like Tescos. If sufficient people put pressure on Tescos et al to drop Nestle as a supplier, the I suspect Nestle woud be more influenced. The current boycott has run for as long as I can remember and has yet to make a notable difference.

I have reported it on the Site Stuff topic area.

Ladymuck - I agree to an extent, but I do think it kind of makes a difference. A guy from my church used to be the chairman of Tearfund (big development and relief charity). Nestle had gone to them to ask them to put out a statement saying that Nestle were in fact complying with the WHO guidelines etc etc. Tearfund declined (because they didn't think they were). But Nestle clearly cared enough to ask.

Ladymuck · 01/05/2007 17:18

I just don't think that it is much to show for a 15 year (or more?) boycott, I'm afraid. Especially as not that many peple read TearTimes (or whatever the mag is - I forget).

cappucino, it's just a question of who you take money from, really, not whether the ad is effective or not in getting people to buy it (though presumably it's meant to be).

Not taking money from Nestle is an ethical position, really, and ethical positions should be consistent.

I don't know if the Nestle boycott has anything but a marginal effect on their profits or even their behaviour - like a lot of consumer boycotts, it can be hard to tell.

But there are a lot of things I choose to do or not to do which have no effect at all on the wider picture - I expect a lot of are like this! I mean, me not using plastic carrier bags (when I remember to take a substitute) is going to have a zero effect on global warming or landfill or wildlife, but I choose not to add to the plastic mountain in my own, teensy weensy way
