How much Weetabix and porridge for 6 month old?

My son turned 6 months a few days ago and we recently started weaning. I'd like to try him with Weetabix and porridge (Ready Brek) but not sure of the portion sizes.

Is 1 weetabix biscuit adequate for him, with half a banana?
What about porridge? Will give it with fruit pureed.

He has quite a decent appetite to the say the least and has been loving food so far!

If he's only just started he will literally eat either a few of those tiny baby spoons of one or the other. 1 weetabix and half a banana is more like toddler portion size

Spam88 · 30/08/2017 20:35

I haven't weaned yet, but my understanding is that it's just about them exploring food at this stage so I wouldn't get hung up on portion size. I read somewhere that oatibix is better than weetabix, don't know if that's true but makes sense seeing as oats are soluble fibre.

My 9 month old has half a weetabix and about an inch and a half of banana. She won't always finish that.

kingfishergreen · 30/08/2017 20:36

At 6mo we gave DD 1/2 weetabix and 1/2 banana - she usually left a little (but are most of it).

Also with either breast milk or formula, no cows milk until she's 12 months.

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 30/08/2017 20:37

I would start with half a weetabix

kingfishergreen · 30/08/2017 20:37

*cow's

LottieDoubtie · 30/08/2017 20:39

Cows milk is fine on cereal from 6 months.

I'd give half to a whole bit of weetabix to allow for mushing up and chucking. I don't think I'd expect more than 2 or 3 spoonfuls to be actually eaten at 6 months.

CatsCantFlyFast · 30/08/2017 20:41

I'd let him eat what he wants. What somebody else's child eats won't tell you much as there's a huge scale of variance, all within a healthy weight

Orangedaisy · 30/08/2017 20:43

Mine manages about 3 baby weaning spoons (6.5 months). So less than a quarter weetabix and I make porridge with a dessert spoon of porridge oats and splash of milk, 20 seconds in microwave. Yy to cows milk being fine from 6 months on cereal.

dementedpixie · 30/08/2017 20:43

I started off with a third to a half of a biscuit and that was plenty.

NerrSnerr · 30/08/2017 20:47

Cows milk is fine on food, it's just not supposed to be used as a drink. I think we started on weetabix at about 8-9 monthsI think my daughter wouldn't have more than half a weetabix with a bit of fruit. Before that she just had fruit or veg.

And

Cows milk is fine on food, it's just not supposed to be used as a drink.

Waaaaahht? Everything I thought to be true is a lie!

Are you sure? I thought milk had to be cooked until 12 months.

I'm going to Google the hell out of that!

kingfishergreen · 30/08/2017 22:14

VERIFIED!

Cow's milk is not to be avoided before one year, it's just not nutritionally complete so shouldn't be relied upon as a key source of vitamins / minerals etc.

I did wonder why milk was out, but yogurt was in.

Good to know.

dementedpixie · 30/08/2017 22:14

You can use small amounts of cows milk in cooking and cereal from 6 months. It doesn't have to be cooked. Not suitable as a drink until age 1

Spam88 · 30/08/2017 22:14

king as far as I'm aware, cows milk does no harm just it doesn't contain all the nutrition babies need so shouldn't replace breast milk or formula, but is fine to use in food.

Spam88 · 30/08/2017 22:15

Sorry, cross post!

kingfishergreen · 30/08/2017 22:19

I'd even been separating DD's mashed potato before I added a tiny dash of milk for DH and I.

What a wally.

TooMinty · 30/08/2017 22:21

I'd go for half a Weetabix mashed up with milk. And maybe a tablespoon of Readybrek mixed with two tablespoons of hot milk (or cold then microwave it all). But from memory the baby porridge that you just add boiling water to is easier when making tiny portions and most supermarkets do their own brand so not necessarily really expensive.

LottieDoubtie · 31/08/2017 14:59

😃 king you learn something new every day! Better that way round than the other- and at least you haven't been having formula on your mash!

FartnissEverbeans · 01/09/2017 00:23

DS LOVES Weetabix. He started off with just a few spoonfuls and very very quickly progressed onto eating whole biscuits.

Oatibix is better because Weetabix causes nightmare poos with flakes that stick to their bum and cannot be wiped off without serious effort. I switched to Oatibix on the advice of a clever Mumsnetter!

Sometimes I add fruit purée or unsweetened applesauce to the Weetabix.

Ready Brek is great. I like the Organix porridges too, they're quite tasty and very very quick. Some have lumps in though so look out for that.

crazypenguinlady · 01/09/2017 10:50

Thank everyone! Tried him on some porridge with banana this morning and he wolfed it down!

Cheers for the tip about Oatibix, I'm going to pick some up later to try him on the weekend.
