Day 6 milk not in properly help!

So my milk still hasn't properly come in, had the midwife out yesterday and Monday, he's not been doing enough wet nappies. So I know he's not getting enough and mw agreed. I thought something was wrong, he's just hungry all
The time. Not sure his latch is good either. So now I have to put him on the boob to nurse for a while and express every 2-3 hours. When I express ( hosp grade pump) I get a max of 20 ml which isn't enough. Am exhausted. What's more Wierd is my boobs are bloody huge but useless... had to top up with a bit of formula which I feel very guilty about. Anyone else have flow problems? I will try anything at the point. I just want my milk to be flowing enough so he can access it.

Aww Belle, this sounds difficult. What does your baby weigh? Wet nappies are SO hard to assess and it is easier to assess poo. A baby who's feeding OK on day 6 would have two or three large yellow poos in 24 hrs. How does this compare with your baby?

Belle1616 · 30/08/2017 13:24

He weights 7lbs 6 oz.

He hasn't pooed today or yesterday

:(

Has finally been weeing though

Thanks Belle but I meant what is his weight in comparison to birthweight.

He should have stopped losing weight by now.

If he has not been weighed since birth he needs to be weighed ASAP.

Belle1616 · 30/08/2017 14:32

Oh he lost 6 percent they weighed him yesterday

As hard as it sounds, try not to panic or get stressed. Using formula is a necessity at this point, I found thinking of it like a medicine that my baby needed helped. It also doesn't mean that you'll need to use formula forever, it's possible you'll be able to reduce the amount of formula and then stop needing to use it altogether.

A random tip for expressing is to really try and relax your shoulders, it helps to get the milk going.

Ok that weight sounds fine. Your 20ml expressing sounds normal for six days too. Your baby can have the breastmilk you have expressed - not sure why he'd need formula. If you are getting up to 20 MLS every two to three hours then that's fine - not sure what they are expecting?

Just to clarify- ask them why your ebm is not sufficient at this stage. And ask someone to observe a feed. And also have him weighed again.

It's unusual to have no poo over two days - presume that's been checked out?

Belle1616 · 30/08/2017 16:13

Yes she said he might be constipated. But if nothing by tomorrow am ,will call them again

Similar happened to me but my baby lost more weight. I topped up with formula as told to by the hospital after breast feeding which stopped the weight loss and dehydration. Medela make cups which you can feed your baby with to stop nipple confusion, your midwife should be able to get you a few.
Are you getting enough rest? My milk came in after a staff nurse looked after my baby all night and I got some much needed sleep and that's what the nurse said would work. Now my baby is just breast, the topping up was just temporary.

I completely understand what you are going through. I was only getting formilk, and no hind, he was doing plenty of nappies but was losing a lot of weight. I expressed and got a few mil, so had to tip up with formula. lasted two weeks and moved to formula fully once he was putting weight on with the formula top ups. I could not continue to put us both through the torture and stress and could not have him losing weight. For me it was more important he got fed, how did not matter. But I still felt guilty and if I had failed at the time, and it was the support of fellow mums on mumsnet that helped me through it. Moving to formula was best thing I did as I could start enjoying my lo, don't get me wrong, formula and bottle feeding comes with its own set of challenges and you don't get the same support as you do with bf.
There is no right or wrong with bf or formula. You are doing an amazing job and will continue to be a fabulous mum to your baby whatever you do.

We had the same (DS is now 5 weeks), he wasn't getting enough over the first few days. We topped up with formula by syringe to prevent nipple confusion. Offered boob and then formula. We also went to have some breastfeeding support to check latch, positioning etc at the local low risk birth unit. Gradually phased out formula and DS is now 10lbs, similar birth weight of 7lbs 1Oz. Good luck
