You put them on when you've made up the bottle to shake it without it going up the teat or spilling. At least that's what I used to do with DD1. I haven't used them with the others though.

Do you mean the little discs or the kids?

The discs are put in instead of the teat so that you can freeze/store milk with contamination.

The kids are to protect the teat from contamination and leaks.

*without contamination rather!

So you can use the bottle as a storage jar. I have never used them as the teat with the lid on works fine

Stops spillage if you're out and about with bottles in bag/pushchair/car.

I never knew and never used them!

Ok thanks everyone. I assumed it was to use bottles as storage jars when required. If I'm shaking up formula I just put the bottle together with teat and lid. But then wondered if I should be using the cap to shake up formula to prevent the teat from.... I don't know what! Lol! So thought I'd ask the wealth of knowledge that is mumsnet. It seems like too much of a faff to put the cap in to shake and then take it out and put the teat in. And on the go I make up bottles as needed so I'd rather not be faffing - plus the less handling of the teat/bottle the better I reckon. I am not sure I'll be using them much! X
