Weaning from BF to FF, how much FF should 9 month old be drinking?

I have, possibly found a bottle that my LO will drink from, if I 'pretend' she is holding it (it is sainsburys own gripping bottle, typical, we spent fortune on expensive ones!). I am intending to keep BF evening and morning, and whilst we are still giving her a night feed, then too (although working towards cutting that out too).

How much formula should a 9 month old be drinking? She is small for her age (16lb) but fit, healthy and not underweight (ie in proportion), she is weaned, three good sized varied meals a day (mostly).
How much, with the am/pm BF, and how much without? How many times per day? (one mid am, and one mid pm?).

Thanks everyone

Ds is 11 months, but at 9 months he was still on 4 7oz feeds a day. 7am, lunch, tea and 6.30 bedtime. He only recently swapped to 3 feeds a day. 6am, 2ish and 6.30. I think the recommendation at 9 months is for about 18oz of formula per day as a guideline. It's really confusing coz you are meant to keep their protein meal separate from their milk to aid iron absorption which is why I finally changed times.

If you are breastfeeding am and pm I would not start formula at all. I would give juice or water as a drink with solid meals. No need for milk at every meal. HTH

I give my DS (7 months) 7oz at 7.30am, 3pm and 6.30pm. He has three meals a day in between these. I think they had supposed to have about a pint a day so you might only need to give one FF just in the afternoon - or as mears said she might not need the formula at all - mine just has it as a snack in the afternoon as he can't last from lunch until tea without getting hungry.

Hi PtC. My dd is 9.5 months, for about 1 month now she's just been bf morning and evening, and I just give her water in the day (plus 3 solid meals including plenty of dairy). She seems to be doing fine (happy & chubby).

So I would say don't worry about giving her any formula (but am not qualified in any way to say that!).

Wow, no formula at all? How will I know that she is getting enough milk?

She has 3 good meals, and feeds in between rather than at same time. So, if I offer her a bottle and she only takes 2-3 oz max twice a day, and has good am/pm breastfeed, she will be fine as long as she eats healthily? She loves food, and we often add a bit of formula to her food in the view that if we cant get her to take a bottle, she will at least get some elsewhere (plus yoghurt, cheese, etc).
I suppose I am worried that she will not be getting enough nutrients/calories from my BF (blame a HV for that paranoia

If however, it would work without FF during the day, then fanstastic!

I say 3 good meals, actually 4!
8:30am - porridge/babby muesli - small amount. Philly on toast/scrambled egg (loves)
12-12:30pm - large pot of mixed veg/chicken/fish/etc with milk added, small pudding of yoghurt and fruit or similar
4-4:40pm - pasta/fish/chicken/etc, something different from lunch. Some finger food (butternut squash/cheese etc)
6:30pm snack of fruit/yoghurt/rice pudding/similar.

My ds is just 9 months.
He has 7oz of formula at 8ish, then porridge or weetabix type with fruit at 9.
He then has lunch with pud and another 7oz at about 5pm.
Then it's t-time at about quarter to 6.
He goes to bed about 8, after another 7oz. HTH

PavlovtheCat - I really do think that there is no need to give formula at all. Use cows milk for cooking. Won't she drink out a cup BTW?

ilovethis · 29/03/2007 16:57

i never gave dd1 any formula either, bfed her till she was 1.5. she drank water and ate lots of healthy food.

PavlovtheCat · 29/03/2007 17:18

Mears - she does drink water from a cup, prefers to, so we had started to try one for milk, she drinks a bit then squirts the rest across the room and laughs heartily!

She does love her food. So, perhaps it is possible not to give her FF. Next prob is how to get her to nap without feed?!! ANother thread perhaps!

Definitely sounds as though there is no need for formula at all to be. Hope others come along to reassure you
