Breastfeeding problems

My ds is 11 days old and up until 2 days ago was bfing really well and then my milk just disappeared so he was on bottles all day yesterday. My milk seemed to reappear in the evening so I fed him in the night but he stayed at the breast for quite a while then woke an hour later and took 4oz of formula so obviously wasn't full at all. Now I'm all fevery again today which is what happened when my milk came in last time but he's had formula all day again. I really want to continue breastfeeding but I can't leave him unsatisfied as that's just being selfish. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really upset that it's not happening for us as his latch is perfect and I feel like it's a massive loss to give up. Having a really hard time with it

Do your boobs feel tender or look red? You may have a clogged duct(s) which is slowing supply. They can also lead to fever and turn into mastitis if you're not careful.

I think it would be extremely unusual on day 11 for your milk to dry up. Have you tried using hot packs on your breasts before feeding to get the milk flowing?

If you do have blockages hot water can help, as can 'dangle feeding' (weird though it seems!)

No I kind of wish it was that. It was my original thought too but I don't have any soreness or redness. I just don't know what's happened :(

How did you know your milk had disappeared if I may ask?
My best guess would be that he was wanting to clusterfeed, very frequent feeds are normal early on - mine had days where he would feed every hour/two hours! So the fact he took a bottle an hour after his feed doesn't necessarily mean your breastmilk is insufficient. Clusterfeeds are tough but help establish your supply, even if you don't feel like he is getting milk out his stimulating the boobs will increase your milk.
Your boobs will also be less engorged when supply is established so may feel empty but are still producing - did you try expressing by hand to see if milk came out?
Is baby gaining weight?
The first weeks are the hardest, hope you get support to cope.

Agree, explain what happened to make you think that your milk had dried up?
There is lots to be done for supply if this is the issue...

Heya, I think your supply has probably just settled down from the initial enforcement rather than your milk drying up. Most milk is made when baby feeds anyway so may seem like they feed for ages and ages, and then are hungry again (baby's tummies are tiny. I once fed my first child on and off for 16 hours solid 😓).

It sounds as if you may have mastitis though. I would ring 111 and see if you could talk to someone. If you can feed as well it might help clear it (particularly if it is mastitis).

Xxx

Also there is a HUGE growth spurt pretty much every day in the first few weeks. They'll seem unsettled an un satisfied but it's totally normal. Eat indicators are heavy spikes nappies and weight gain (of any sort)
