My baby boy is 16days old. For the past 8 or so says seem to have a poor latch not sure if it's a bit me not finding it easy to line him up with my nipple as he's so wriggly, but he also doesn't open his mouth very wide and when he does its for less than a second and miss the opertunity and that seems to be my olny chance. I'm really sore and i just really want this to work. I also have noticed today a slight bit of milk coming out of my areole is ths normal? Any advice guys ?

Congratulations Flowers The soresness is a killer isn't it? Have you watched any videos about getting a good latch? So much better than pictures in leaflets or books. And Lansinoh and every possible moment!

I always hold the breast with my thumb just above the nipple and a good chuck of breast underneath then put the nipple right by their nose (with their head stretching slightly back so that they can open their mouth wide). Then it's a quick slip down and in once the mouth is wide! And not being afraid to stop straight away and start again if the latch isn't a good.

If you can access any breastfeeding support (breastfeeding cafes, anything) they're usually great with help.

Thank you for the advise @brokenbattledroid I am so sore but keep taking my bra off and applying the cream. I will try some videos and am hoping to go to a group on Friday. I feel like I need someone to show. / watch me to know I'm doing it right

It doesn't always happen naturally in terms of a latch. My firs latched easily and I was lazy in terms of technique. My second just didn't. I saw a paid lactation consultant but the advice she gave actually a HV or midwife could have given. Back to basics. Nose to nipple. Look at YouTube videos. Get someone (professional) to observe a full feed not just at latch or after latch. For me I was latching well then moving without knowing. Also check for tongue tie etc. Good luck and well done. Xx

Nose to nipple, chin tucked in, more areola visible above the nipple than below. Baby nice and straight in their body. When you see that big gape pop them on. Will be sore first 10 seconds or so but if good latch should fade.
Of course that's all easy for me to say!
Definitely see m/w or h/v. That's what they are there for amoungst other things.
And I found keeping my top off helped. Lots of lansinoh and air...just shut the curtains and went topless all day! They will toughen up but I feel your pain, I lost the top off one of mine about 2 weeks in.

Thank you for your advise guys. Watched some videos online and kept watching and staying positive and I think with a few days persisting taking of when wrong we've masterded it. I haven't expressed any milk for 2days at all and had been expressing everyday. My nipples are still recovering but got the latch right feels so much better no pain just feel the pulling motion.. Really appreciate all comments 😄

If your baby isn't great at opening mouth wide, try feeding in the underarm position! Congratulations on your new 👶, you are no doubt doing much better than you realise x
