EBF 11 day old DD. Think my supply has dropped?

DD is 11 days old and EBF. We got off to a brilliant start and after the initial few cluster feeding days, we got into a lovely routine, her latch has been checked and I've had plenty of milk. My boobs have generally been firm and full and she will empty one, and have a quick go on the other during every feed. Since yesterday my boobs have been soft, don't feel even half as full as usual and DD doesn't seem as satisfied from her feeds and is "fussy" during feeds.
Has my supply dropped? What am I doing wrong?

If you're feeding her on demand, your supply is unlikely to be dipping. It's more likely that she's having a growth spurt or that your supply is adjusting to her needs and she's fussing for unrelated reasons, E. G. She is coming out of the sleepy newborn phase and starting to wake up a bit. As long as you're still getting plenty of wet and dirty nappies don't worry just yet. Do make sure that you're eating and drinking lots yourself, and try to rest when you can. I know that is way easier said than done!

Once your supply is established you boobs don't do the 'filling up and emptying' thing.
If she's having wet/dirty nappies as normal it's probably not your supply dropping.

Boobs stop doing the huge full thing around this point - doesn't mean supply has dropped, it means it's adjusted to the right level for your DD's needs. During a growth spurt it can take a couple of days for your supply to catch up with increased demand, best solution is to feed more often until dd is happy and so your body gets the message more quickly. Sorry, it's hard work!

MamaTT · 21/07/2017 12:03

Gosh it's hard work isn't it? She's been on my boob pretty much on the hour, every hour all morning. It's an a wonderful excuse the spend the day lazing in bed together though. She's always got a wet nappy and she's pooping like a trooper. She's awake more and far more alert and nosey the last few days than she has been since she was born so I suppose her energy needs are changing.

It is hard work but totally worth it for that milk drunk look when they come off the boob! Grin

At 11 days? It's more like 11 weeks that you normally get the shift when supply has regulated. Unless you're talking about the initial engorgement when milk first comes in - that can last a few days so you might just be experiencing the end of that phase.

If you do have the luxury of staying in bed and feeding with lots of skin to skin, definitely take it!

Good signs to look for are that she's alert and contented between feeds/sleeps and that she's producing at least 6-7 dirty or wet nappies a day.

This is useful to read though :)

From what I remember that was one of the big growth spurt phases for us. She's feeding more to increase your supply

MamaTT · 24/07/2017 12:26

Gosh we've had a hard few days. She's still on my boob constantly and just isn't the content little person I had a week ago. She seems constantly unsettled. We were up from 11pm until 2am with her as she would just feed/whinge/feed/whinge. I'm at my wits end now. Health visitor is coming tomorrow so I'm hoping she has some advice! Baby is still producing tonnes of dirty and wet nappies. She's only 7lb but she's got one heck of an appetite for someone so teeny. And one heck of a voice!

Aha sounds exactly like growth spurt territory to me! How did HV visit go?

ripa81 · 26/07/2017 19:26

I was coping with low milk supply since the birth my baby with c-section. I tried power pumping, ate cookies, oatmeal and was drinking plenty of water but didn't notice any increase in my supply. However, since I started drinking Healthy nursing tea my supply got increased and I started producing enough supply to exclusively breastfeed my son!

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/07/2017 19:36

Your supply will adjust, this is how breastfeeding works.

Babies get fractious, depending on sages they go through.

If you want to continue with b/feeding, just ride it out.

MamaTT · 27/07/2017 21:33

Definitely a growth spurt. My little pudding has put on 10oz in 6 days. I'm so so tired but it's worth it if she's thriving. She seems more content today, although still feeding often. She let me put her down long enough to feed the other 2 dc, get us all dressed and out the door to the park. It'll get easier eventually, I'm sure. I just feel awful for DD1 and DS. It's the summer holidays and I have no time or energy to play with them like I used to!!
