Best formula for 6 month old EBF baby for occasional feeds?

I might be overthinking this...in fact I'm definitely overthinking this...but I'll ask anyway!

I have a 6+ month old who's been completely breastfed until we started weaning in the last month. I want to start to go out and about and leave him with husband/my mum etc and I want to have formula in the house for these occasions (have back up expressed milk in the freezer but it's just a major faff all round). I got a little bottle of cow & gate follow on milk and DH tried that last night when I went to a yoga class and he had a bit of it (he might not have been that hungry). I just go and look at the shelves of milk in the supermarket and I have no idea what to get. Will any of them do?

In theory, it is better to give regular, standard formula than follow-on, OP.....the standard one is easier to digest than follow on, which is based on casein protein rather than whey protein.

But for the occasional bottle, it's not a big deal, honestly :)

Thank you tiktok, I didn't know that!

It's perfectly true just not well known. You can get good factual information about formula if you google first steps nutrition trust infant formula uk.

Fantastic, thank you very much

We use the ready made Aptamil (because they're the most available around here) first milk ones for DD when I'm not around.

I found expressing after 6 months just didn't work well.

She's 10 months now and will have them at room temp, which saves a lot of faff (we were heating until about 8 months I think).

Hi, i used Aptamil from birth to around 7 months, i then switched to Aldi Mamia, it's less bubbly so results in a less gassy baby.
My midwife and HV both advised against follow on milk as being a waste of money with no health benefits.

We were advised that aptamil 1 is the closest to breastmilk, so easiest for a baby who is usually breastfed to tolerate.

RelaxMax, read the links. It's quite wrong for anyone to say that any one brand is closer to breastmilk than another. The Aptamil thing about being easier for a BF baby is untrue - no evidence at all for this.

Don't understand about it being bubbly, either...what would make it bubbly?

If it's for occasional use then just get one which comes in a ready made format. There's no point buying a whole tub. I don't think it matters which brand and you probably don't even (really) need to stick to the same one.

Tiktok, i don't need to read the links thank you, I'm just repeating what we were told by the midwives. My baby is happy on an occasional aptamil so it's working for us.

I did understand you were only passing on what you were told, Max. The suggestion to read the links was just in case you wanted to, you know, find something out for yourself. Some people do :)
