Hungry baby milk

DD is 10 weeks tomorrow. She has been bottle fed for 4 weeks. She is now up to 6oz a bottle but wants feeding every hour/hour and a half! She's on 9/10 bottles a day! I'm worried she isn't getting enough and she is feeding pretty much constantly (I was advised to put her on formula in the first place because she was literally on the boob all day every day and wasn't gaining weight). Has anyone successfully moved on to hungry baby formula?

I thought hungry baby formula was meant for babies nearer to 6 months, as a possible way of staving off early weaning? I didn't think it was intended for small babies?

What does your HV think about it? Is she following a centile?

Will she take more than 6oz in the bottle?

So are you saying she's having 54 floz in a day? How much does she weigh and is she following her weight centiles?

Length can be pretty inaccurate at this age but was she very tall when she was born?

Oh and hungry baby milk just takes longer to digest, it doesn't have anymore calories to satisfy hunger.

Taylor22 · 30/06/2017 19:44

Don't do it. I was told it's like cement in the digestive system. It just sits there making them feel full.
A baby doesn't read the formula tin. It doesn't know how much it's supposed to eat.
If he's hungry feed him his milk but don't try and force him to change at this age.

Hmm, well the average intake is 25 - 30oz a day by 1 month old, but of course babies should be fed according to their hunger cues, even if this is more than the guidelines.

However up to 60oz a day for a 10 week old to me, does she spit any up? If her weight gain is normal and she doesn't have any symptoms of any ill effects of drinking so much, then I'm sure it's fine but maybe speak to your HV and GP if you are concerned :)

With regards to hungry baby milk - just don't do it. If your LO is drinking that much then really the last thing she needs is something that is going to be harder for her stomach to digest. I personally think it is a gimmick marketed at gullible first time parents and sounds reassuring, but they are not recommended by anyone - WHO, the NHS or First Steps nutrition, who independently review formula milks, their composition and the claims made by formula manufactures in the UK. They are also a bit lower in fat to make up for the extra protein (formula regulations dictate that regular infant formulas need to be between 60 and 70 calories per 100m, so none of them are going to be significantly more calorie dense than another) which is not what you want - fats are an important energy source for newborns.

Hungry baby milk is not recommended by health care professionals. It is unnecessary.
