10-week old DD is exclusively bf, I eat a lot of chocolate - am I storing up problems for her in the future re risk of diabetes? Has anyone come across any research on this? Thanks!

Good God,I very much doubt it.
Each as much as you want!

kiskidee · 19/03/2007 19:10

no, no, and no

caughtintheact · 19/03/2007 19:12

in my research (n=1) i have found chocolate to be essential when breasfeeding

lilymolly · 19/03/2007 19:12

God thats the last of your worries dear!! What ever gave you that idea? Please relax, I used to have a glass of wine when I bf dd, but she is not an alcoholic, although she is only 14 months old

MerryMarigold · 19/03/2007 19:14

you may be storing up problems for yourself in losing the babyweight! over 6 months after stopping bfeeding, i am the same weight as i was 2 months after giving birth. chocolate addiction.

Guitargirl · 19/03/2007 19:15

Thanks - I think am just an over anxious first time Mum. People keep saying to me 'she eats what you eat' and am thinking, 'God, I hope not...'

Guitar, even if you are nowt but Macdonalds and turkey twizzlers your milk would be of a better quality than any formula ever could be.
Relax, and don't worry. Also forget about weight issues too.It is the one time when you really can not worry about this stuff.

mamijacacalys · 19/03/2007 20:16

Myself and most people I know, whether bf or ff, ate tons of chocolate each evening to help survive the first few months of all our babies.
Should proably be on prescription!
As Moondog says, don't worry and keep chomping!

tassis · 19/03/2007 21:36

i also eat tons of chocolate since i've been breastfeeding (dd now 8 month), cant get enough of the stuff. i was never this bad b4 do you think its related to feeding?

Vmama · 20/03/2007 10:45

me too and 4 wks after section i have only lost half the baby weight but need chocolate!!!!

Brangelina · 20/03/2007 10:59

I also began a huge chocolate habit when bfeeding, put away literally tons of the stuff and was surprised that my milk wasn't coming out brown. Before then I used to be a one-square-and-I'm-full person, although I did attempt to consume a couple of squares a day in pregnanacy as I'd read somewhere that it made for a happy baby . I don't know if it worked, but my DD is a pretty happy soul... and very healthy despite the chocolate milk.

My only problem was at around 9 months my DD suddenly upped her food intake and asked for less milk, but my calorie (read chocolate) intake stayed the same so I got a bit porky. My appetite did adjust eventually and I managed to lose some weight although have remained curvier than I used to be. I'm waiting to see what happens when I finally stop bfeeding. Does the chocolae craving go then?

pinkdolly · 20/03/2007 18:25

Good question Brangelina. I have tried to lose some weight post pg but finding it hard due to my choccy habit. Am still holding onto about an xtra stone in weight . Am really hoping it gets better when I stop b/f'ing (tho no immediate plans to do so)

edam · 20/03/2007 18:31

People who say 'she eats what you eat' forget that you actually digest the food you eat, it doesn't just miraculously transform into bmilk in your intestines! And babies have very different nutritional requirements from adults anyway - they need plenty of energy for growing. Bm is supposed to be sweet and fatty - that's what babies need and what mothers make even if they aren't actually eating a handful of chocolate digestives at each feed (like I did).

In the early days after DS1 was born and the midwife was still coming to see us she told me that because I was bfeeding I could eat a mars bar everyday as I needed the extra calories.

I have followed this advice religiously on all 3 DC

edam · 20/03/2007 20:34

Lact8, one of my friends was told this by her HV 'to cope with those early evening feeds'. I made dh buy me a mars bar every day on his way home.
