What is going on with my boob?

DS is 9 days old, had the usual pain from a few crap latches in the beginning leaving cracked nipples but corrected quickly I think. On tues I felt VERY engorged and my boobs were agony, started to feel shivery and weak and quickly fed him loads and took painkillers etc and it passed.

However ever since my left boob is weird, it is really painful, when he latches on and during feed and is red and sore even when not feeding although only really noticeable when someone hugs me etc! Milk is coming out very slowly, it never squirts out, even mid feed, DS feeds very slowly on it. After a feed my nipple is all lumpy, I can't feel any obvious lumps in my boob though. I pumped and that was painful too, it's really getting me down cos I can't work out what to do about it. I'm feeding him on it first every time, I have to really gear myself up to latch him on cos it is so so painful even with regular ibuprofen and paracetamol. I've tried massaging it in the bath/shower and during a feed in case it's a blocked duct but no joy.

Sorry this so so long, I will try and get to breastfeeding clinic on Monday but it's really making me feel a bit miserable.

Poor you Sad

Sounds like typical Mastitis.

Link to the NHS site for info...

Congratulations on your baby Flowers and I admire your perseverance!

I agree mastitis and don't wait until Monday. My friend thought she could ride out the infection until after the weekend and ended up in hospital for nearly a week.

Can you get an ooh appointment?

HopeAndJoy16 · 03/06/2017 08:14

I agree with the above, sounds like mastitis. I would see your GP since its not resolved. Massage your breast lots during feeds, and in the bath/shower. Boob "shimmy" where you lean down so your breasts are dangling and give them a good shake to dislodge any blockages and help the milk flow. Keep feeding/expŕssing on that side as often as your LO will go on. Paracetamol and ibuprofen! Hope that helps!

Oh crap really? I thought I'd nipped in the bud on Tuesday , I'll ring gp, thank you

I agree that you should get to a doctor as it sounds like a blocked duct if not already mastitis.

In the meantime, there are some things you can try to clear the blockage - massage (I know it's painful :( ), some people find using a wide tooth comb useful for this. Heat can help to get milk flowing so try this in the bath/ shower. Absolutely keep feeding on that side, a baby is the most effective way of clearing a blockage. Try to point baby's chin towards where the lump is. Dangle feeding can be really effective as well, as gravity helps clear the blockage. If you have a pump you could try using that as well- massage the hard area while pumping/ when baby is feeding.

Longer term, please do get your latch checked by a specialist as blocked ducts and mastitis are signs the breast is not being efficiently drained. Although it could just be bad luck due to early days engorgement.

Good luck and well done for breast feeding- it does get better, honest! xx

It's so weird cos I feel fine in myself, I always presumed mastitis =fever etc, I thought I'd managed to feed through it on tues! I'm sure there is a blocked duct but I just can't seem to locate it and feeding isn't dislodging it.

Agree sounds like mastitis. When I had it I only had the infection symptoms (fever etc) after the boob felt clear iyswim. I also had pain around the nipple which I also thought was s blocked duct, as others have said straight to GP cause or out of hours as the infection is horrible! Good luck x

GreenGoblin0 · 03/06/2017 20:18

the fever symptoms can come on really suddenly so definitely a good idea to try to nip it in the bud now as PP have said

TheUnseenAcademic · 03/06/2017 20:25

I had something similar which I left unresolved for too long and Indid end up with a lump that slowly spread until half my boob was solid! I was already on antibiotics for mastitis which I thought had gone as the flu-like symptoms were over. It turned out to be an abscess caused by mastitis which had to be drained and took a fortnight to properly go. The draining hurt like hell but it was ok in the end and didn't have any long term effects on breastfeeding or on my boob. Do get it checked out and be pushy- one of the reasons mine got do bad was that my GP initially said that having a sore, rock-hard and slow-milking boob was 'normal'!

Spoke to 111 this morning and they've actually prescribed me antibiotics over the phone which I really didn't expect! So glad I don't have to schlep to local walk in centre which is miles away with a toddler & newborn.
Thanks to all of you for pushing me into taking action!

That's good news! It's worth carrying on trying to shift the blockage as well - I've found dangle feeding to be the most effective way, as ludicrous as it makes you feel. With a newborn you might get away with laying them on your lap and leaning over, depending on how big your boobs are! Hope you feel better soon xx
