Stopping breastfeeding- dealing with sore boobs

My DS has just turned 1, and after several weeks of reducing feeds he seems to have lost interest altogether. Although I would be happy to continue BFing if he wanted to, I'm also fairly happy to stop, and this seems like it may be a natural end.

However my question is how do you manage the soreness and full boobs? He hasn't fed in 2 days, and my boobs are sore but not hard/lumpy, just feel full. Do I just hold out and wait for it to settle? How long does it take for your milk to dry up? We were down to only 1-2 feeds in 24 hours anyway, so this isn't a sudden stop, but my milk supply has always been plentiful so I'm wondering if I should be expressing a bit to help with the fullness, or will this just encourage my milk supply to continue?

I think it would probably be an idea to express a bit - just until you're comfortable. That should help your supply to diminish, but reduce your risk of mastitis.

Thanks Chickpea - I have actually managed not to have a relatively easy time of breastfeeding health-wise and avoided mastitis so far, so I'm hoping I don't get it now!
