Can anyone tell me the sort of chair I should be looking for to breastfeed in? I can't afford a special bf chair - like the ones in Blooming Marvellous, for exammple. Was thinking more Ikea prices. Any suggestions please?

I didn't bother with chairs. Any low chair or sofa will do. The best thing to invest in would be a boppy cushion, you can sit anywhere and the cushions makes it nice and comfie for your both. I called mine my hands free set as I used to eat at the table with dd happily feeding on the boppy cushion.

Dinny - sorry can't help you with a BF chair. For the first few weeks, laid ds on a pillow placed on my lap to BF him.

Those ikea ones are good

dinny · 09/07/2004 21:58

I'm paranoid I need a chair as bf didn't work out last time. Have got a V-shaped pillow thing too.

Codswallop, which Ikea chair is good for feeding?

I've used an Ikea wicker chair and Oland chair with no problem although once you have got the hang of it anywhere will do !! Also used v-pillow with newborn especially in bed.

Hi dinny, sorry didn't mean to sound patronising, didn't realise it was your second. Good luck with bfing.

I used a £19 IKEA one that was black canvas for both of ours. The back is slightly sloping (good for winding them and closing your eyes at the same time in the middle of the night and definitely has no arms(their legs soon get stuck against them...)it has been fantastic and probably the best purchase made. Only thing is I can't remember the b**y name of it, will have a look online and will get back to you if I find anything.

Had a quick look and although they don't do the one we've got there are loads of cheapies to choose from. Have a look at KLACKBO (£35) in 'fabric armchairs' and OPPALA (£15) in 'other armchairs' both seem to be similar to ours, although the back on the Oppala may be too horizontal - don't want you falling asleep on the job!! Happy shopping!

Dinny, Poang chairs from Ikea are great, and bouncy enough to get an older baby to sleep. I regret so much not having bought one as soon as DS was born. I'll get it for my second (if there's a second... wish me luck!)

florenceuk · 10/07/2004 00:39

Actually I didn't like my Poang chair for feeding because the arms are hard, and so worried about poor DS's head. I used an armchair with reasonably upright back - and a footstool to get the right height. Basically something low and supportive where the arms don't get in the way. If your sofa is supportive enough it can work quite well, mine is too saggy. I did lust after an antique Victorian nursing chair - you can see the general shape here .

poppyseed · 10/07/2004 00:41

No arms is a must if you have long, big babies like I did!!

dinny · 10/07/2004 12:44

Thanks for the tips everyone. Seems to be a split between arms v non-arms though.

Pesme, you didn't offend me at all.

Chandra, good luck with number two!
