4 week old 'messing about' while bf

That's the only way I can describe it, he will feed for a few minutes, then wriggle and wave is arms and come off. If I put my breast away he'll start rooting for it again. He will often mouth my nipple and make a half-arsed attempt to feed. He doesn't appear at all distressed during. Does this seem normal? He's gaining good weight and I feel that bf is going well apart from this relatively new behaviour. At other times he latches on and is there for 20-30 minutes and not move a muscle.

Yes, very normal. He's just learning about the world.

I also have a four week old, and he's doing exactly the same as you describe OP. ...so I guess it must be normal.

OP, your username is a tad worrying? Are you OK? Being a new mum is hard work - I felt like someone had put my life in a box and threw in a hand grenade. It gets easier though. Have you got some support in rl?

I found that quite funny but they do stop, promise! They also get super efficient at feeding after three or four months and can knock out a feed in less than 5 minutes.

My four week old does the same and nipple munches at the same time too. Very frustrating. If it's too sore / in the middle of the night for over 30 mins she gets formula which she has barely any of because she actually wasn't hungry after all. Boo!

When DS used to get a bit fussy it was often wind - but then was when he was a bit older than 4 weeks, but maybe worth a try.

@Whatsername17 what a lovely and observant comment. And agreed. It gets more fun as they get bigger.

Thanks, I did post when we first brought DS home and my mood was terrible. It's not brilliant now, but to be honest I just haven't changed my username and have absolutely no imagination for a better one right now!

Haha you are allowed to have no imagination! 4 weeks is so very little still. However, you are only days away from a first smile, if you haven't had one already. My dd2 is 17 weeks and I've found it much easier this time around. With my first dd I really struggled. She had colic and cried a lot and it was tough going. I always envied the mums who had it together whilst I floundered. It's only now our kids are older that they will admit that they were just better at pretending than I was.
