Breastfeeding vitamins

I was advised by my doctor to take specialist breastfeeding vitamins but now that my child is 2.5 and only feeds morning and evening I was wondering if anyone knows if it's ok for me to just switch to regular multivitamins? I know that too much vitamin A isn't good for young babies but is it still likely to be an issue now that I'm feeding much less? The breastfeeding vitamins are so expensive I'd like to switch to something cheaper if poss.

Hi Caz, you don't really need any supplements at all as long as you eat a balanced diet (and if you don't, then it needs to be fixed rather than supplemented) or have a particular need (anemia for instance).

The only thing I was told to use was Iodized Salt for cooking instead of normal salt, but this is also recommended for children in general once they start eating food with salt in it, which is probably the case for a 2.5 yo.

I'm a vegetarian, and when I stopped taking them (when she was a lot younger, not sleeping well at all and I'd just gone back to work) I picked up an awful virus so the doc told me to keep taking them. I do feel better when I take them, just wondering if it's ok for me to switch to a regular multivitamin now.

Hi Caz, if a multivitamin makes you feel better by all means take it - but you really don't need any additional supplements to breastfeed. Eat to hunger and drink to thirst in exactly the same way you would normally Smile

Sorry just re-read and it sounds horribly patronising ShockI meant - your Dr is out of order IMO and a regular vitamin supplement will be fine.

Thanks. I did moan about the cost at the time and she just said 'they're 3 for 2 in boots at the moment'!
