doctor not being much use about thrush - what do I do next?

I'm reasonably sure (mostly from reading on here) that I have thrush in my right breast - it's painful at the start of feeding and afterwards, and I found a little white dot on the tip of the nipple yesterday.

Went to the doctor, who was a bit useless and just said 'well get some canestan and put it on the nipple'. (He was, incidentally, about twelve, and useless about the other things I asked him about too).

I know I can do more, but what? How do I know if it has gone into the ducts? Where can I get Daktarin Oral Gel? Why was he so useless, and why was I a wimp and didn't ask more? And I'm also quite open to suggestions that it might not be thrush too.

I've been breastfeeding for four months, by the way.

Make sure you treat your baby too I think nystatin (sp?) drops work if he/she has oral thrush. For you i'd take diflucan.

This is my first ever post!
I went to the doctors and they gave me Tri-adcortyl ointment. I put it on after each feed and pain was gone in 24 hours. Needs washed off before feeding again. Hope that helps x

you should be able to get daktarin oral gel over the counter at the chemist. Put that on your nipples as well as take the diflucan. Putting on your nipples stops you being reinfected from your babe and stops you infecting your babe. No need to wash it off.

Two cats on the bed - there is excellent info about this on the Breast Feeding Network website (just google "breast thrush treatment") - sorry can't do links yet . You can print off their leaflet and take it to your GP.

You can also ring your health visitor or a community midwife at your hossie, who will both hopefully know more about breast thrush than your 12 year old GP!

Does your nip hurt after the feed? Do you get shooting pains deep in the breast after each feed? Also, does it feel sensitive when cold air hits it?
