Not enough milk at end of day?

When I feed 7 week old dd at around 6pm, she squirms and wriggles and grunts more than normal and tugs my poor nips until she's red in the face and I'm red in the boob. It really seems more pronounced than at other times of the day. She is then unsettled for a couple of hours until next feed. I had thought this was due to wind, but it occured to me that perhaps my milk supply was less at this time of day and she was frustrated trying to fill up on it. Anybody wise enough to help on this?

Both breastfed and bottlefed babies are often fussy around this time of day. I' not sure why, it could be wind, tiredness anything really. Also during a growth spurt (common around 6-7 weeks) a breastfed baby may appear to be more fussy. What she is actually doing is needing to feed more often to increase your milk supply. Let her feed little and often and it should soon settle down. If she is actually hurting you, take her off and check the latch. It may be worth getting someone to check the latch in any case to make sure she isn't getting frustrated because she is on incorrectly.

JulieF is right - this is something that bf and formula fed babies do. If you suspect extra breastmilk might help, then if you can, offer the breast more often at other times of the day and night which will make more

Hello spots. Congrats on your new addition!

I think it is a recognised fact that your milk supply is lower in the late afternoon and evening. I certainly had that concern.

ds1 fed loads between 6pm and 10pm for the first 12 weeks. I was worried that my milk supply was not adequate but kept putting him to the breast often in the evenings to help bolster my supply.

When ds2 came along I had exactly the same fussing in the evenings and dealt with it in exactly the same way. Again, the fussing only lasted a few weeks.

Please don't worry that your milk supply is not adequate. I worried about this all the time. With both my boys, I just stuck with it, feeding them more in the evenings and suddenly with both of them it got better at about 10-12 weeks i.e. they would have an evening feed and then settle.

I am not an expert by any means - but I know that my own supply IS low in the evenings, but only seems to be an issue in the first few weeks. It suddenly got easier with both of them. HTH
