3 mths dd suddenly fussy at breast

hi

my 3 mths dd2 good feeder normally suddenly fussy at breast. she had a growth spurt last week where we fed constantly for 2 days and then started sleeping from 9pm until 4am so i'm not complaining. she feeds about every 2 1/4 hours normally.

But....today she has cried when being offered the breast. She's been coming off/on and generally hasnt wanted to feed much.

Yesterday was DD1s birthday party so very hectic and not much 'routine' so dd2 was very tired but would this make a difference??

she has started pooing less. gone from 2 a day to 1 every other day. but lots of wet nappies.

any ideas?

satin - is she well otherwise ? How are your breasts, any pain ?

Read kellymom.com under "fussy baby" section. Lots of reasons given.

Could be thrush. Ds and I got this at 3 months too. It is a real bugger, but treatable.

The other one that can cause this and is very common is too fast/slow let down. Again kellymom tells you how to cope with this.

Have you tried any of the bf helplines, do you have a local LLL ? They tend to be very experienced.

Tell us a bit more. Someone here may be able to help further.

no pain for me. she hasnt been sleeping as well as usual today. catnaps rather than an hour.

have tried feeding sitting and lieing down and neither lasted long.

Satin - I suggest expressing if you can. Make sure baby gets some bm, that is your priority. Feed the baby. Use a cup or spoon. See whether she will drink that way.

Do you have a baby cafe, LLL, hospital drop in, anywhere where baby could be checked for thrush tomorrow ? GP/HV may be able to find out too if they are good. I am hoping for you that it isn't thrush, but if it is catch it quickly.

Call one of the helplines asap tomorrow. Do you want me to post some numbers for you or do you have them all ?

Could she be teething and in discomfort?

satinshoes · 11/03/2007 19:41

thanks, i thought of teething but no dribbling or anything.

have given her some calpol to see if that helps. she's gone to sleep now - settled for her daddy but not me

hopefully later will be better...

Unusual for a 3 month old to be teething.

Forgot to ask, is she exclusively bf ?

Not too unusual for a 3 month old to be teething, both mine had teeth by then!

yellowrose · 11/03/2007 20:16

Ok clay, that's strange it must be genetic, I thought most start teething after 6 months ?

yellowrose · 11/03/2007 20:17

My ds had first tooth at 8 months - I was lucky !!

satinshoes · 11/03/2007 20:19

thanks for the numbers yellowrose. she is exclusively breastfed.

clayhead - dd1 didnt get teeth until 8 months which is why i wasnt sure about dd2 now being so young.

well, that sleep lasted about 10 mins and she has woken and had another feed, a bit better this time. and again, now sucking her thumb ready for sleep so we try again

Ah Satin, it is damned tough when you don't know why they behave like this, hope tomorrow is a better day for you both

Clayhead · 11/03/2007 20:23

AFAIK, any time between birth and 1 is 'normal' and yes, it is familial!

satinshoes · 11/03/2007 20:27

ah, dh just came down and announced an almighty poo. she didnt do anything yesterday and only a small one this morning so had practically 2 days worth. when she normally does 2-3 a day.

i realised earlier that her poo routine had changed but i didnt think it would make her so fussy. she's gone to sleep now so, yes yellowrose, hopefully tomorrow will be better.

thanks for your help.
