Is "modern" breast milk really best?

Are there any medcal proffessionals or scientists able to answer this question (without starting any kind or argument cos thats not my point here) ??
I am wondering about the amount of toxins passed through the milk as a result of current poor diet.
pesticides, additives, cleaning fluid residues and general metabolic wastes that cannot be removed by sluggish digestive systems and overloaded lymphatic systems are stored in our fat. our bodies use our fat to make milk so are we passing a load of nasties to our babies?
Has any studies been done on this? Our breast tissue contains a lot of lymphatic vessels which carry waste. does this get into the milk?
Years ago there weren't loads of chemicals in our environment and the majority of people were too poor to over eat and become over weight or obese so they didn't have fat cells full of 'rubbish'.
I would love to hear a proffessional opinion on this.

I would, manuka

I was going to say something like "do it for your baby's sake if nothing else" but didn't want to make you feel any harder on yourself

you know what I am saying, though

nogoes · 11/03/2007 12:38

I felt similiar to you Manuka but if you try your best that is all you can do. You are working hard on her diet now and encouraging her to eat healthy so she is having a very good start.

tiktok - thanks for the info. re. HIV. Interesting.

yellowrose · 11/03/2007 14:45

manuka - I agree with the others. Feeding is only ONE aspect of motherhood. I hope you are able to get help so that you can be happier, really having a child has been one of the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me. Sometimes just talking to other mums helps too

manuka · 11/03/2007 14:58

I feel a lot better for all your comments. Thankyou, you're all very lovely! x

manuka, it would be good to get some counselling....you can call the breastfeeding helplines, though that might sound surprising, and you will find people who understand the strong feelings people have and who will not try to trivialise but to support you.

The other thing I would suggest is you write to the maternity unit and tell them, that merely urging people to breastfeed is no good. Mothers need skilled help in getting over the challenges - you cannot have one without the other. Yet we have breastfeeding being promoted, without the matching guidance

You're right. They were just really scary and controlling. It was an absolutely horrible experience. I keep starting to write a letter of complaint- the c section was done without enough anaesthetic so very painful so need to complain about that too- but it's very overwhelming and I start ranting in the letter which makes me look like a complete mental case!

indiajane · 12/03/2007 12:46

Manuka - make sure you send a copy of your letter to the hospital's Chief Executive. Many of my clients are hospitals and you need to make sure the CE gets sight.

If your C-Section was done without sufficient anaesthetic I'd be inclined to copy in your PCT too.

Good luck - don't worry about ranting.

Hi Totsy, I use crystal rok deoderant myself. It really is v good. But I'd take the toxins in my body over a cow's. My liver is designed to last seventy odd years and clear out all manner of stuff as opposed to a cows which can only cope with grass.

Also Manuka, next time yell I AM DISCHARGING MYSELF RIGHT NOW and leave. The cheek of making you stay there !!!!

I think the big problem actually (donning teflon overcoat) is that SOME ffing mums think bf mums think they are indulgent hippies and SOME bf mums think ff mums 'should try harder'. Both camps are wrong. We're all just trying to get on with the very hard job of raising kids.

yellowrose · 12/03/2007 16:30

manuka - sounds like a bit of medical negligence going on there if you had pain during c section. How awful

yellowrose · 12/03/2007 16:33

Totally off the topic, but tiktok, I read an article today that said there is new research (from Arica) that babies born with HIV or infected after birth are living well into their teens, even without treatment. Previously they had thought and were not expected to live beyond 5 years or so as most remain undiagnosed and untreated. A ray of sunshine in a truely sad situation.

tiktok · 12/03/2007 17:18

Thanks, YR....their mothers are probably dead, though

And the babies they (the teens) will have have a high risk of being born with HIV.

yellowrose · 12/03/2007 19:03

It is a terrible tragedy. Even if a really effective treatment is found, most of the poor in Africa will have little access to it

manuka · 12/03/2007 19:42

Indiajane whats a PCT?? Are you a solicitor?

yellowrose · 12/03/2007 21:33

PCT = Primary Care Trust (NHS)

manuka · 13/03/2007 18:31

Thanks Yellowrose! I love yellow roses I'm going to get some for my garden now that I have a nice one!

yellowrose · 13/03/2007 19:28

Oh good, manuka, I love yellow flowers and mum was a florist, so we always had flowers in the house. Yellow is my favourite colour for most flowers. Enjoy the ones you are going to plant
