Organic Formula

Hi.

I will be formula feeding my baby when he is born in around 3 weeks. I am wondering what everyone's thoughts are on Organic Formula?

Don't want to drip feed but here is the background.

Diagnosed with RA after DS1 - he switched to donor milk at 6months with formula top ups. Went into remission and managed to BF DS2 until he was 2 years old. First time Formula feeding from the get go (well will have a month post birth before treatments start)

Feeling really upset about it to be honest but onwards and upwards!

Sorry, what does RA stand for? I'm following as interested to know what people think. I've been using Cow and Gate, mainly because it's the first that was picked up in a panic when I wasn't able to breastfeed and my baby got really dehydrated. I just stuck with it but never had time to research the options.

I won't tell you not to feel upset, because I know it's gutting when you really want to breastfeed - but try to think positively.

Sorry - rheumatoid arthritis.

I understand that formula is well regulated so it doesn't really matter between brands but organic is different altogether

I believe HIPP is the only widely available organic milk. Obviously has to follow the same regulations.

I was determined to bf but it did not work out for us. FF is not the bad thing that I thought it to be.

We have access to Bellamys also.

I'm just curious if the organic formula is worth the extra expense.

We live on a large organic farm so totally get the organic stance but the formula is very expensive!

I'm guessing you have been advised that your medication will contaminate your breast milk?

Certified organic formula would surely be a better option over regular formula, if your concern is over its ingredients and the possibility of toxins within inorganic cow's milk, used to formulate mainstream formula milk.

HIPP organic is the only one I personally know of.

Sorry to hijack, but for anyone who might know, would it be bad to change to organic from cow and gate now my baby is already 6 months old? Weaning but will be on formula for another 6 months, albeit gradually fewer bottles.

No idea how severe your RA is but some biologics are bf friendly. I'm still feeding dc3 at 15 months on azathioprine.

I managed to bf DS2 for 2 years on medication buts it's just flared up in a big way and my rheumatologist has come up with a plan that isn't BF friendly. We didn't come to this decision lightly. I

I'm sure it would be fine to switch formula so long as you did it gradually?

That is mainly my concern - we are on an organic farm and have been on non organic farms before. The difference in use of chemicals and feeds is huge!

I would have thought that infant formula would be very tightly regulated in terms of residues from chemicals used in farming/production. This article from Which mentions that pesticide residue has to be very low even for the non-organic formulas:

So I don't think organic is going to make a difference in terms of the benefit to your baby. It might have benefits to the environment and so on.

That's interesting assassinated - although it's more what the cows eat I guess.

In saying that organic formula has palm oil in it so....

All I can tell you is that when bf failed with dd1, she thrived on Hipp. When I stop bf dd2 in a couple of months she will go on to Hipp too.

I use Holle. You can buy it on Amazon. Only slight drawback is they don't make readymade bottles for out and about, and I've yet to find a shop that stocks it so have to order online. I chose it over Hipp after quite a bit of research.

I too wanted to feed my son organic formula so bought hipp. He was really sick on it. Turns out he had reflux too so had to be on gaviscon but the sickness didn't completely subside until we changed the formula.
Not sure what was in it that was different though.
