Anyone been prescribed levofloxacin (antibiotic) whilst breastfeeding?

Just got back from docs with prescription for this, and reading the leaflet it says..

'Do not take the tablets if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby. Tavanic could harm your baby.'

Doc knows that I am bf, and was struggling to work out what to give me, as neither amoxicillin nor cefalexin have worked (sinusitis).

Just wondering if she is completely mad and I shouldn't take them, or whether others have used them before.

Phone the pharmacist, they will be able to tell you more!

CantSlimWontSlim · 09/03/2007 16:39

The pharmacist is at the doc's surgery (they're dispensing as we're 'out in the sticks'), and I feel a bit stupid as I've only just left there.

I suppose stupid is better than making dd ill though.

Could call any pharmacist?

monkeymonkeymoomoo · 09/03/2007 16:43

They won't mind that is what they are there for

I double checked with the pharmacist about nose drops the doctor had prescribed dd2 when she was 2 weeks old. The pharm did think I was bonkers but it was worth it for peace of mind.
I'm on antibiotics for mastitis and they don't actively say it's ok for bf - just 'tell your dr if you are bf'. I'd be concerned if they specifically told me NOT to bf.

Phoned - pharmacist checked with GP. GP is now double checking and will call me back....

How old is your baby?

Nockney · 09/03/2007 16:52

Ok, found this . Says that the AB will go into your breastmilk but at dosages less than they'd normally give a baby. I'd probably take it, particularly if your LO isn't tiny tiny.

CantSlimWontSlim · 09/03/2007 17:05

Thanks ladies.

Doc called back and said it's ok to take. That article is reassuring Nockney (dd is 13 months and bfs 2 or 3 times a day).

If you can take some of the pills when she's not going to bf for ages, that's a tiny bit better, but given her age etc, I wouldn't worry too much.

Nockney · 09/03/2007 17:17

Oh, should have added, they do put the 'talk to your doctor before taking this med if bf' on everything. DH bought me cough meds a little while back. The active ingredients were liquid glucose and molasses, with a touch of menthol to make it taste gross. It had a warning about breastfeeding - I shit you not.

CantSlimWontSlim · 09/03/2007 18:25

Yes, I know they can go overboard sometimes, but it was the fact that it didn't say talk to your doctor, but rather just 'don't take it' that had me worried.

Tablets are twice a day so will take one after her morning bf and one after her bedtime bf.
