Tongue-tie

I've seen it mentioned a few times here, what is it?

It's where the skin that holds the tongue to the bottom of the mouth (the frenulum) is too short so severely restricts the movement of the tongue. The classic sign is a notch in the end of the tongue making it look heart-shaped where the skins holding it down. The baby may not be able to protrude their tongue past their lower lip at all. It may or may not resolve itself in time, but if not it may lead to some speech problems later on (if severe). My DS has tongue-tie which was only picked up at 5 months. We had major problems with breastfeeding which I am convinced were caused by the tongue-tie.

Moosma, yes as Twinklemegan described.

My mum, my brother and I are all tongue-tied and it was very difficult for my mum to breastfeed and bottle feed. But I believe it is easier to correct these days.

It has not affected our speech at all.
