best baby formula

i wondered what the best formula was to give to my baby he is 4 weeks old. he was breastfed then i switched to cow and gate. hv has said i can switch to the hungrier babyfood or another variety.

is there a better brand?

he was 10lb 1oz and is currently having 5 oz every 3 hours hence why the hv suggested the change.

my ds1 had the same probs with cow and gate but i just carried on using c & g .

any advice?

Aptamil is very good.

MrsBadger · 07/03/2007 15:08

Every 3hrs is par for the course - not sure switching formula would change that.

smellymelly · 07/03/2007 15:09

I used Aptamil extra, the purple one (which is for hungry babies) after and with breastfeeding. A while ago now but was under the impression it was the best. I was warned off the others, can't remember why now.

smellymelly · 07/03/2007 15:09

Oh and if you do change just do it the once, again hv advice I think.

stressteddy · 07/03/2007 15:09

Aptamil is supposedly most like breast milk

skirmish · 07/03/2007 15:10

i agree with mrsb...3 hrs is good...and the hungry baby formula is harder for them to digest, therefore making them go for longer inbetween, not filling them up more, i think....but i'm sure someone who knows more will be along soon

MrsBadger · 07/03/2007 15:13

You're spot on Skirmish - hungry baby milk isn't any 'richer' just, as you say, harder for them to digest.

If it ain't broke don't fix it...

raspberryberet · 07/03/2007 15:18

Every three hours sounds pretty normal to me. And Skirmish is right - hungrier baby formula just bulks them up because it's harder to digest.

If he's doing OK on Cow and Gate then why change?

Re Aptamil being "most like breastmilk" ... it's all hype. None of them are anything like breastmilk, so don't buy something just because it's hyped up to be so.

Seona1973 · 07/03/2007 15:35

3 hourly is normal. My ds only started going longer between feeds when he was around 16 weeks old

madmarchhare · 07/03/2007 15:38

DS went around 3 1/2 hours, some will go less, some will go more. I really wouldnt bother changing. No one formula is better, just that different ones can suit different babies.

taylormama · 07/03/2007 15:39

wouldn't go with hungry baby milk as it can make such a young baby constipated. My DS fed 2 hourly till he was about 16 weeks ... totally normal they have teeny tummies so need to feed little and often.

peachygirl · 07/03/2007 15:41

I was advised to use aptalmil in hospital du to it having pro/prebiotics. I was severely warned off SMA

bubblebell1 · 07/03/2007 15:54

when breast feeding he was on me constantly no exaggeration. mw reccommended reducing breast to just twice a day. i started to give formula and he went 1-2 hours also taking around 3-4 ozs hv said to mix the formula ie 2oz of normal and 3 oz of hungrier and now he now has 5 ozs and 3 hours between feeds.

my hv said the dif between the hungrier baby food and normal is the whey content. no idea what that is or does sorry.

but i think if i stick to what i have it will reduce the risk of constipating him etc.

is the general opinion that all the brands are the same?

You sound like your doing fine to me! Why change?! Its normal just like everyone else is saying 'he's 4 weeks old of couse he's going to want it every 3 hours, my dd1 had it every 2.5h for ages day and night.

Sounds odd to me why your HV suggested hungrier babies milk. Especially when he'l be having a big growth spurt soon if anything it should be then that you up it.

I use Cow & Gate Organic & swear by it

bubblebell1 · 07/03/2007 16:12

thank you i will just leave it stick with the c & g normal.

Hi there. My dd is now bottle fed exclusively on C&G.The hungrier formula simply makes it harder to digest and runs the risk of tummy ache. DD is 16 wks now and still feeding 3 hourly in the day although sleeping through, with a dream feed.Think it is entirely normal. She certainly didn't take that no of oz when she went on to bottle feeding.Well done!
