Any advice on a chair to breastfeed in?

Hiya, my DS is 10 weeks and I'm fed up with being horribly uncomfortable when feeding him. I usually sit on the sofa with a mountain of pillows or on the bed but can't get it right and have aching back, shoulders etc. Don't think I want a rocker though... So far, the most comfortable place was on the floor with my back against the wall and knees up! But don't always want to sit on the floor to feed...

I do have a suspicion that my sofa is generally pants. Perhaps I just need to go to a sofa shop and try them all out...with ds attached!

I agree that the good old fashioned nursing chairs are the best. It has to have no arms for when lo gets bigger, a nice high back, good support on the base of your spine, low enough so that your feet are flat on the ground but high enough so you can stand up whilst holding your lo. I would love an expensive new one but instead have been given one that my aunt had for bf her children. It is really important to get a good position as I ended up with blocked milk ducts everytime I fed in uncomfortable positions.

ivelostmyboobsboohoo · 05/03/2007 15:01

see i always preferred one with arms myself

My lo always ends up hitting his head or getting his legs stuck on chairs with arms. The worst are the ones in the mothercare cafe near us!

how ironic lori21! muminfife, do you mean the dutalier babyglide ones? just looked on m'care website and those were the only ones.

A comfy armchair. Any armchair, with good size, broad arms. If you are going to buy one, try it out in the shop. Put baby in your arms, sit and try it out. The problem with a sofa is that you have to keep switching places to get near the arm of the chair.

I put ds head on the arm of the chair, usually supported with a pillow under his head too.

When he was a baby, I put one of those L-shaped pillows around my waist and put him on it. I have big boobs, so had to support his head and my boobs.

You don't need an expensive rocking chair.

Have you tried laying down to feed?

sandfairy · 05/03/2007 15:57

I found it thanks muminfife! Short legs and a big bum! (No, the chair!) Pretty expensive at £279.99 but may be worth it. Not sure if I need one with arms or not. It seems that there are two camps: arms and armless. I just don't know which one I'm in!

oh, I do sometimes lie down to feed. Latching on used to be a nightmare in that position but better now. It's ok in the night but during the day I'd rather be able to sit up comfortably and read... is that actually possible though I wonder?

I found these chairs from ikea fantastically comfortable to feed in. I couldn't feed lying down, and we had 2, one in our bedroom and one downstairs.

I propped ds on a cushion that I put on the arm of the chair.

Good luck!

the most comfortable chair was a sitting room single armchair that we bought so that it could go into our living room after i finished bf dd. we had it in her bedroom.

it has a firm seat, my back can reach the back without cushions while my feet can touch the floor and it has arms at the right height but not always necessary as they get older and feed quickly.

other than that, i bf lying down in bed.

I have a dutalier glider and it's v comfy but rubbish for breastfeeding imo. Personally I needed something more upright without arms.

yellowrose · 05/03/2007 16:33

Depends on size of boobs and size of child.

ARMS on chair very good if you have big boobs like me and small baby and need pillows, etc for support.

NO ARMS or anything if child is toddler like mine and can stand on his head to feed
