i wanted to breastfeed (mixed feeding 2 bf 1 bottle per day) until ds was a year old. but lately he has started taking the piss (i know he's not, but ykwim?): he feeds for a bit and then pinches my nipple really hard. i pull away and say no. then opens his mouth as if to feed some more and then bites down and drags his teeth along my nipple argh. i've tried putting them away etc. to no avail. time to stop? or will he stop doing this?

How old is your ds? Could he be teething? Teeth do not have to mean stopping bfing. You'll find that a lot of Mumsnet mums have been through this (including me - my dd nipped me a few times whenever she had a new batch of teeth, particularly if I was encouraging her to keep feeding when she was loosing interest. But it didn't go on! And I'm still feeding her at 18m.)

The instant he bites hug him tightly to you. It goes against your instinct, which is to pull away, but that will hurt you more. You might want to shout NO at that moment too. That might be enough to stop him.

Every time he bites, take him off the boob and put him down for a moment. Then resume the feed (do yourself a favour - the other boob). If he bites again the feed has to be over. You could try telling him what and why, babies understand a lot more than we give them credit for. Offer himr a teether instead, especially if you know that he is teething.

When you say 'pinches' do you mean teeth or fingers?
