My lo is 5 months and was having 5 8oz bottles per day. I haven't weaned yet, I'm planning to wait till 6 months. However, he now seems to want just 4 bottles a day. Is this unusual? Should I start some weaning? He can't really sit himself up yet.

I weaned about three weeks earlier than I wanted to because of family pressure. I was giving my baby bottles every 2 1/2 hours and it was getting hard, he was only four months old.
You know when they are ready because they have more control over their tongue and show excitement when you have food in front of them, my son used to smile and wave his arm about! Your baby may also ask for more feeds, more regularly, or start taking more in one feed which results in him dropping another.
We started on one little spoon of baby rice, after a milk drink in the morning, mixed with his milk - it took three weeks to get him used to the bland taste and texture - we have weaned really really slowly and now at eight months, he has three meals a day and is starting lumpier foods.
There is no right or wrong timescale, your baby should give you all the signs. Health visitors would like you to wait until six months, but I spoke to an older HV and she said she can remember when they used to put rusks in the milk at three weeks, so just let your baby guide you!!!!

If you wait until 6 months, you can do baby-led weaning, which is much less work, ime.

Definately not if he can't sit up. Do as Nockney suggests. It really is much much easier if you wait.

Our little one couldn't sit up when I started weaning very slowly but he could hold his head steady - he had his first few weeks in his reclining chair, set as upright as possible - it meant he could enjoy his food without having to hold himself steady.
Some babies don't sit up for ages, but still wean perfectly fine.

Thanks for replies. I don't get to the pc much, so sorry for delayed reply.
My concern really I suppose is that he seems to want LESS milk rather than more. He's gaining weight fine, seems happy; I don't want to wean just yet if I don't have to but it just struck me as odd that he seems to want less milk.

I weaned early that 6 months because DD was wanting an extra bottle in the night after sleeping through since 4 weeks. If he's not wanting more I'd leave it as long as possible.

Personally I weaned both mine at 16 weeks (but they are older so that was the advice at the time). However, I would do the same with any future children - just small amounts of pureed fruit and veg from a spoon. Go with your gut instinct. If you think your baby wants some, try some - if they don't take to it then stop and try again a week later. HTH

My LO was only having 4 x 8oz bottles and I waited til six months. He was fine with it. I reckon it was worth it as he took to it like a duck to water!
