The title says it all.
I've just had an argument with someone who was watching me wind lo after his bottle.

My way is usually to sit baby upright or put him on my shoulder. I do occasionally pat/rub but most times I don't feel it is needed.

This childless lady was adamant I should be patting/rubbing vigorously (sp)

I find that just sitting up usually does the trick and seems to lessen the chance of an up-chuck.

Any opinions please.

No I don't think you have to, whatever works for your baby. Mostly I rub/pat gently but often as soon as I get him in the winding positio he burps right away.

I rub gently then pat for a bit. If no wind comes up I try sitting him upright, supporting him under his chin and back of head and gently rock him from side to side. Works a treat.

Do what works for you and ignore other 'advice' unless you have specifically asked for it.

It so depends on the baby. Some bring their wind up really easily, some don't..

I used to wind my baby with her sitting on my knee and then rub her back up and down, but when I took her for a check up at the hospital the paediatrician told me that you didn't have to wind babies. Just to sit her upright on my lap without doing anything and the wind would come up on its own if it was going to. But I used my own judgement, and I still gently rub her back, but find it quite often, as the paediatrician said, comes up on its own.
