BF DD crying and farting lots...

and her dirty nappies aren't so regular. The crying and farting often happen together with her pulling her knees up to her chest.
So I'm guessing that her tummy hurts. Is there anything I can do for her?

Does sound like she's constipated and windy. How old is she? I'd talk to your HV or midwife. Just in case its reflux or colic.
Perhaps its the type of formula or an intolerance to the milk in it?
I give my babies warm water in a bottle to ease constipation (obviously boil it first and let it cool to warm).
Otherwise I'd try to give just breastmilk for a day (tho I realise expressing can be a pain).
Saying all that, when I was breastfeeding chocolate, OJ and strawberries made them fart and gave them terrible wind! Good luck.

She's 4 months and at home with me, so BFing isn't a problem. I hadn't thought that what I eat could be a problem.... Must keep an eye on that.

More info: it seems to get worse when she feeds.
We're between GPs at the moment (due to moving), so I don't have a doctor or HV to ask.

Is that breast feeding?

foxybrown · 01/03/2007 12:53

Have you tried Infacol or Gripe water? Sorry, I'm not much help with this, but if I find out anything, I'll let you know. There must be some on-line advice. Can you call your last HV?

Songbird · 01/03/2007 12:54

If you don't have a doctor or HV to ask, you could try your local chemist. I did this when we were on hols in Ireland and dd got constipated (her tummy was rock solid bless her). The pharmacist gave me some type of gloopy medicine (glycerine? can't remember) which really did the trick. Don't know if this is suitable for 4 mth old, but they will know. I've taken to my local chemist in a big way - they know more than we give them credit for!

I would go to gp - ds the same. He was diagnosed with reflux and given medication, which helped to a degree. He still has problems with trapped wind (20 months) but it gets easier the older he is.

Notquitegrownup · 01/03/2007 13:00

Just want to echo Songbird's appreciation of pharmacists. They are brilliant. Just ask for the pharmacist in person, and they will spend 10 minutes chatting to you about whatever condition your children have just developed, and what to do about them. Mine was far more use than the doctor when ds2's excema started.

Thank you for all the replies. DD was really fussy this evening on me, but took a carton of formula from DH (which I have to admit makes me a bit ). If she doesn't improve tomorrow, I think I'll take her to a pharmacy. Bless her, it really can't be much fun for her.

How's your LO today?

MrsTittleMouse · 02/03/2007 13:28

Lots of straining, lots of farting, no dirty nappies.
So I went to the pharmacist who was lovely and who gave me lactulose. Fingers crossed that it works...

do you think she's constipated rather than windy? tried the warm water yet? hope you are coping ok!

mum2fred · 02/03/2007 14:30

If it's any consolation my BF 3month old DS often squeals as well as cries when he farts/poos. He has always strained doing number 2s, my HV told me that this is normal for some babies. He does however do regular poos (or a daily MEGApoo as I call it) although once in a while will not poo during hte course of a day (which is also quite normal). In chich case I normally give him the boiled water and that works a treat.

ruth2007 · 02/03/2007 16:55

Hi My DD is now 6 m and exclusively BF. She was really bad with wind when small and still gets episodes. I never worked out if it was anything in my diet. She also could go for days without a poo.
We tried Infacol which helped a bit, winding her before she ate and at the end, also if she pulled off for any reason in between.
I found bouncing her gently on my knee after a feed helped but no too soon after or she may throw up
Try propping her up slightly during and after a feed so her head is slightly elevated, this helps if there is some reflux going on as well.
It gets better btw, 12 weeks was a bit of a turning point.
HTH

ruth2007 · 02/03/2007 16:57

oh and she still crys when pooing - we like to joke that she thinks she is "too posh to poo!"

MrsTittleMouse · 02/03/2007 18:55

Hurray! We had uber-poo this afternoon.
Where else but on MN could I pronounce the great news?
I've actually taken to crossing my legs when I BF recently, with her head on the top leg, to elevate her a bit. Hopefully it'll help, but she's certainly has been more cheerful since she cleared herself out! The straining was painful to watch, she was purple with effort in Natwest this am.
