Scientific Evidence???

I went to see cousins new baby on Saturday and she asked me if I would be breastfeeding DS when he arrives - I said yes as I think that if you can it is important to breastfeed and she laughed at me and said ooohhhh they've got to you then - I asked her what she meant and she said the breastfeeding police - I said no and I thought breastfeeding helped protect me against breast cancer, was linked to children hyaving lesws allergies, higher IQ and lessens the risk of being obese as an adult as well as protecting them from lots of things in terms of getting antibodies from breastmilk - well I must be stupid then cause she said her best friend is a midwife and she said that there is nothing a baby can get from breastmilk that it can't from formula and therre si no scientific proof to back up the benefits of breastmilk at all - is this right - I didn't think so and think maybe that she was getting defensive cause I said I think breastfeeding is better for the baby but I know she will bring this up again and want to be able to say 'Well actually................'

Mind you she did seem really surprised when I said I would rather baby have milk made by me for baby humans than chemically processed milk meant for baby cows so maybe she isn;t too clever - or maybe its me??

(By the way I don't care what she does to be honest its her choice but I would like to know if she is right in what she says her friend says??)

Oh that is maddening! Sure formula milk is good and of course is a sensible option for many families, but it's only an imitation of the REAL THING! The most obvious evidence is that formula milk companies cannot advertise their products for newborns, and if you look on their packaging it has to say, "breast milk is best" or something similar. I know you will have loads more posts to state other health reasons...

The Unicef baby friendly site has a list of benefits with references to the scientific research to back up the claims.

It also has pdf versions of various information leaflets for parents to download.

Cheers everyone I won't throw these at her but will maybe show her next time she goes on about it, as for this friend who is a midwife - I hope to god she's not mine!!

There have been a couple of newspaper articles that might be helpful:

Nothing but the breast

Bottle-fed babies 'face higher risk of heart death'

Personally I think it's a subject to avoid with friends (along with politics and religion). A mother has a right to choose without being made to feel guilty.

She asked me daisy - I have no problem with what she wants to do but think that if a midwife has told her that breastfeeding is not as good as bottlefeeding then she needs the appropriate information!!
