Breastfed baby gaining too much weight?

CeCeBloomer · 13/12/2016 20:33

Baby is 4 weeks old and has gained 13-15 oz per week, exclusively bf - is this anything to worry about as it is significantly over the guidelines?

You mean your baby is three or four pounds more than when born?

HolidayHunterTeam · 13/12/2016 22:28

Bf babies can't gain too much weight. Nor can any baby. Fatten them up.

CeCeBloomer · 14/12/2016 07:37

Yes he is 3.5 lbs up on birth weight he was 5.5 lbs and is now 9

Mine gained 14-16 for the first 4/5 then started to slow. Shot off charts, me and dh quite ordinary sized. Anyway they are tall and lean these days but I did wonder for a while!

Kerberos · 14/12/2016 07:45

Babies don't read the guidelines. Sounds like you are doing an amazing job of feeding him/her on demand. They also don't follow a straight line. Some weeks they'll gain more than others.

pixie32 · 14/12/2016 07:46

Sounds like a lovely healthy boy! Well done! He is only 1lb heavier than my ds was at birth, and he put 1lb on in week 2 putting him up to 9lb. So I wouldn't worry. What does your health visitor say about his weight?

CeCeBloomer · 14/12/2016 08:00

HV had no concerns when I last saw her but that was a couple of weeks ago, am due to see her next week

Seriously, don't worry. He was quite small at birth and is growing well!

icanteven · 14/12/2016 08:11

It sounds like someone might be trying to tell you that you're breastfeeding too much & he's gaining too much, am I right?

That is nonsense. You can't win with some people - it's either "Is he getting enough? How do you know? You need to top him up with formula so you can be sure." Or "You're feeding him too much - he'll get fat. You better switch to formula."

You are absolutely rocking it here - well done!

Sgtmajormummy · 14/12/2016 08:30

My second was like yours, OP.
Exclusively breastfed and "elastic bands" up legs and arms.
We went to our first checkup after the hospital where the paediatrician took one look and said: "I see breastfeeding is well established. Carry on, Supermum!" which really put my mind at rest.

Don't let anybody mess with your confidence. You're doing great!

Bobochic · 14/12/2016 08:33

Sounds fine!

malvinandhobbes · 14/12/2016 08:36

All 3 of mine were like this, it created a bit of a sideshow at HV clinic.

All three kids are robustly healthy (and tall). Well done OP, it sounds like breastfeeding is going really well.

CeCeBloomer · 14/12/2016 08:36

Thanks all - just so different from my first who was also exclusively bf but gained weight slowly and stayed titchy

Within normal. He's showing normal catch up growth. It will slow down in a few weeks.

CeCeBloomer · 14/12/2016 15:59

Thanks - I did wonder if there was an element of catch up as he was so tiny

OP posts:
Newmrs22 · 15/12/2016 11:31

I wouldn't worry. Mine has kept growing at an alarming rate. He was 18lb at 16 weeks Grin
HV was thrilled and said he'll prob lean out when he moves.

Daytona79 · 15/12/2016 11:34

My boy gained a lb a week for five weeks from 2 weeks old he on 98th centile and as a two year old still is

GashleyCrumbTiny · 16/12/2016 10:53

This is a reassuring thread! 13 week old DD jumped from 25th centile at all weigh-instances up to 6 weeks to 70th at 12 weeks. HV not worried but I was starting to wonder...!

GashleyCrumbTiny · 16/12/2016 10:54

*weigh-ins
Stupid autocorrect.

HorseyHorseyTwat · 16/12/2016 10:59

You're doing brilliantly, keep it up - he's obviously thriving!
