IV antibiotics - will they give me thrush in my boobs?

Hello

I am sure that this is a very basic Q, but I can't find the answer and wondered if anyone knew off the top of their head.

I am due to give birth by planned CS in 4 weeks time. As I am positive for Group B strep, I will have to have IV antibiotics before the section. Will I get thrush in my boobs as a result? I am very prone to thrush and have had it pretty much constantly throughout this pregnancy. When I have had oral antibiotics, both pg and non pg, I have ended up with vaginal thrush and just worried about getting my BF off to a bad start. If I do get thrush, what should I do to alleviate the difficulties with a newborn?

Many thanks for reading this far.

This is tough question as I think it is highly likely that you will get thrush and this makes bfing much harder to establish. I've just started a thread about my friend who is having this problem at 3 weeks so you may get some tips on there?

How about starting to take prebiotics now and continuing after the birth? The only thing that keeps my thrush at bay is a supplement called Exspore but this is not recommended in pregnancy (and probably bfing but I would have given up without it). How about seeing a naturopath if that's an option?

I wish you every luck with the bfing - with a section and possibly thrush you will need to be very determined so use MN, use the helplines, nag the MWs and persevere - it's fab once you get it sorted. Enjoy your baby and keep us updated...

THanks laundry lover. I'll look at that thread. Am feeling rather anxious about the BF generally as I have a 22 month old DD who I think may be rather jealous. She was BF til about 17 months, and I am terrified she is going to want another go if she sees DB2 having milk.

Thanks for replying.

Dolly, not much response to my thrush thread I'm afraid! Are you going to start taking prebiotics?

I wouldn't worry too much about DD1 wanting a go - either just say no (she'll be well put out already by the new baby) or let her have a go and read up about tandem feeding in advance.

My DD1 did show an interest but I just got her feeding her dolly instead and she also 'expresses' with a beaker. Take on board all the tips about reading a book to DD1 when you feed or have someone else play with her and do something special. The one thing that I did find with having a second child was that she didn't feed as often or for as long as DD2, maybe because we don't indulge them as much and they have to grab it fast whilst they can poor things!
