Trying to get 5 week old to take bottle - advice needed!

We've been trying to get our 5 week old dd to take a bottle of expressed milk for the last couple of day - she refuses to take it. Breast feeding is well established.

It does n't really matter for now, but I'm keen to establish bottles as I want to be able to take a break every now and again.

We're using avent bottles and no 1 teats.

Ideas gratefully received

PS DH was giving her the bottle not me

were you in the room?

If baby can smell your milk, he/she will want that. Try leaving the room....I had the same thing with my dd1. She would not take a bottle from anybody if I was nearby.

Try a different teat. DS hated avent teats so we switched to Maman(?) ones. They apparently act more like a nipple as baby has to 'chomp' in the same way he would when breastfeeding to get the milk

get someone else to do it
use playtex teats/bottles

Thanks - I'll give those a try.

I thought the 2m exclusion zone would be enough - next time I'll leave the room and stop talking to dh!

Try the Tommee Tippee closer to nature ones. Make sure the teat is warm, run it under tap first. Get someone else to try feeding and you leave the room. Wait until she baby is really hungry...or try when you have just finished feed, either might work! Top tip is to keep perservering. Good luck - and good on you for starting so early, I didn't until DS was 5 months old and oh god the trauma!!!!

Hi this is what worked for my most resistant dd and it worked for my friend too who had been trying for weeks.

Breastfeed baby for 5 mins or so gently unlatch them use the bottle teat and then see what happens - continue holding them in the same position as far as possible etc. They seem to be in feed mode and more open to try sucking on the thing - then they discover "oh it's the same stuff" Def worth a try.

or you could use a large feeding syringe. They are very easy to use and also mess free..
