nobody thinks that this is a wonderful innovative idea?

If I had a healthcare pro at my hospital who was so encouraging of BF and prepared to go these lengths to help/support, I may have been able to breastfeed.

They'd certainly help to demonstrate expressing. I don't know how they're used to demonstrate feeding, but as it's quite difficult to gaze closely at another woman's boobs, I suppose the bfc might demonstrate what a good latch looks like by placing her mouth on them and it wouldn't be a problem to watch her. OTOH, that soon after giving birth you might genuinely PMSL if she did that.

my problem was latching on, Think they would be pretty good to use for showing this.

those are great!! I'm going to start crocheting some for my local hospital!

There were knitted norks at my antenatal classes, they raised a laugh but I don't know that they were much use for demonstrating breastfeeding

There was a knitted fanjo too, for demonstrating the passage of the plastic dolly through the birth canal

A knitted fanjo at 10cm dilation caused a few winces and watering eyes!!

i saw these ages and ages ago when i was first pregnant on those baby programmes on home and health etc. the midwives were using them to demonstrate hand expressing.

As a breastfeeding counsellor I have one of these and use it regularly along with a puppet to deomstrate latching on. I think they are really useful.

Anything that helps can only be a good thing - we too had a knitted uterus at ante-natal Wonder where you get the pattern for THAT from

mears · 08/02/2007 12:08

We are using balloons for the same reason. Possibly more flexible. Both good though.

i actually found the most helpful thing was those film clips done by that slightly over enthusiastic doctor who showed a mum breastfeeding, the latching on, watching the swallowing etc. helped me no end. when i got to antenatal class and we were given dolls to practice with, dh and i were the only ones, out of maybe 20 couples, who knew how to position the baby for breastfeeding. funnily enough (or maybe not) of those 20 couples, my dd was the only one to be exclusively bf until6 months.

My NCT breast feeding class showed these knitted norks - very entertaining

hotmama · 08/02/2007 21:23

I went to a bf seminar held by La Leche and a knitted breast was used to show how to hand express - was actually very helpful!
