my 5 1/2 month old dd is breastfed and refuses to take the bottle. have tried various types including tommee tippee closer to nature and nuk which is supposed to be recommended by midwifes etc... anyway, just wondered if anyone had tried and had success/ or not with the doidy cup as was mentioned at breast feeding support group today? if yes, when did you introduce it? thanks

I have one.
They were originally designed for kids with CP did you know?

The design is great but the handles are way too small.

We used one with DD from 4 months. Didn't take that long for her to get the hang of it. She wasn't keen on sippy cups at all, and hated the valved spouts, so these were great for us.

The only time i ever used one of these was when i worked in a nursing home with dementia residents... and TBH i didn't even know what they were called!

I definately will keep them in mind for this time though

used one for dd from 4/5 months ... but she refuses to take milk from it, only water ... but now (10 mths) can drink from a 'proper' cup no problem.
Not sure this is exactly a particularly valuable skill for her to have, except when trying to half-inch daddy's beer, but there you go

many thanks ladies!!! will give it a try i think, have tried the beakers with spouts but dd not keen, the ones with valves are too much like hard work i think and shes not keen on the other free flowing ones either. what to do eh? she keeps eyeing up my drinks bottle (only water in it, nothing stronger unfortunately!) but don't think she's quite ready for that.

haven't read whole thread but yep, we have used doidy cups with success.

i started dd at about 14 weeks and just persevered until she became very comfortable with drinking from any sort of open vessel.

she often has a smoothie in a shot glass these days LOL.

when she was about 11 months I switched her onto a tommee tippee straw closed cup - the kind with a valve to prevent spills. i was fed up with carrying her doidy around with me LOL.

she's taken to it brilliantly and since then i've heard bf babies do well with straws.

she's also, recently, figured out a sippy cup. it took a while as she'd never had a bottle she didn't get that she needed to tip the cup LOL.

HTH and good luck
;-)

my gran used doidy cups to move all her 3 children from breast to cups, they never had a bottle at all. then she carried it on with my ds and he was using a cup quite happily very early on!

thanks ladies for all of your posts. has filled me with a bit more optimism, am not planning on giving up bfing just yet, but would like to know that can leave dd for a little while and she can have a drink. she is taking a little solids so not too worried about that.
many thanks for the offer 3andnomore, but i have 1 coming
big hugs

3andnomore - i'm desperate for some of these cups if the offer is still open

3andnomore · 09/02/2007 19:29

Nip, just e-mail me your addi on my E-mail addi and I shall post them sometime next week
no point them cluttering up my kitchen if they could be useful to someone else
