I usde Avent bottles and teats for both my DC, and Aptemil (various different types/strength?).
I used to make up all my bottles either last thing at night (so i just had to re-heat from the fridge) -later on, i just filled the sterilised bottles with water (and kept all the milk powder in a measured container (ie all ready measured and ready to mix) - then just mix with the water and heat, or not if your baby prefers room temp.
good luck

before you give up, have you tried you ds with a bottle? the only reason i ask is that at 8 weeks i wanted to give my DD bottles (EM)so DH could take over somenight feeds and she didn't know what to do with the bottle teat, just kinda gummed it. then screamed for milk!

Hi Debbsy

Best bottles and formula - whatever suits your ds really - I know that sounds not very helpful but I believe all formula milk is pretty much the same, so just get whatever your most local shop stocks, in case of emergencies, and give it a try. Anything that comes in small liquid cartons is great too, as they are very convenient.

You don't NEED to sterilise if you wash bottles and teats very thoroughly in very hot soapy water but I do prefer to - I rinse bottles out as soon as they have been used and then wash all together and pop in microwave steriliser, then take out and leave to dry on kitchen towel.

I think the quickest way to make up bottles is to boil kettle in morning, fill bottles mostly full and leave them all to cool. When the time comes for making up a bottle, boil a fresh kettle and top up, then add powder and shake - it should be just the right temp. You can also just fill bottles at the start of the day and just add powder when needed and serve at room temp - and if I'm honest that's what I do most of the time - but the most recent guidelines on formula do say that the water should be about 70 c.

Hope that answers your main questions x

I found Dr Brown bottles to be the best by far if your little one suffers from colic or wind. They are more expensive but well worth it. For sterilising I just stick them in a huge tupperware container with sterilising solution and water, and change it every 24 hours.
I use SMA hungry baby formula, because ds was a very hungry baby and hv said SMA made for less smelly poo. Lots of people rave about Ampitmil (or something like that - sorry for wrong sp).

It is a tough decision to make, but don't beat yourself up over it. Life is far too short. I gave up bf at 10-12 weeks (changing over one feed every few days), and felt like I was letting ds down and was made to feel like a bad mother by so many people, but we were both so much happier afterwards that it was the right decision for us.

Good luck with it all.

one thing someone said to me about switching was to chose a brand your local shop stocks!

also you prob know this already but start by dropping breastfeeds slowly, one every few days to give your body a chance to catch up or it can be painful

I've used Tommee Tippee and Avent bottles - both equally good.

Making up feeds - I boil the water and pour about one third of a feed's worth into sterilised bottles which I then cool and keep in the fridge. When it's time for a feed I top up with freshly boiled water and add the formula powder - I make it so the bottle "feels" hot, not warm, to the touch. I figure it's then hot enough to be safe, but doesn't take more than a couple of minutes to cool to a suitable temperature.

Steriliser - I use cold water sterilisation with Milton tablets because I found that easier for occasional use when breastfeeding so I carried on with it.

I sympathise btw - my DS is not renowned for his patience!

Should clarify, takes a couple of minutes to cool when stood in a bowl of cold water.
