Posseting, how much is too much

Last question honest...

My DD is sometime a little sick after a feed when I lie her down to sleep. However today I decided to try GF routine which suggested a feed and then a bath. I did this and while changing baby she was sick twice and it was a large amount most of her feed and at quite a force. Did the fact that I fed her before bathing and changing her cause her to be sick so much? Im a bit worried now encase something is wrong with her and almost afraid to feed her again encase the same thing happens. She seems ok just a bit shocked.

kbaby, dd2 was the sickiest baby ever, and I don't think anything I did/did not do would have made any difference. Good job I had unsicky dd1 first, because I might have thought again! It will get better - I remember those summer evenings when I was weaning her - and everything had tomatoes in it - and nobody would cuddle her for that very reason. She will grow out of it eventually - how many adults/toddlers do you know that chuck all over you after a feed? Big hugs to you!

Hi Kbaby!
The hospital midwives advised me that you should leave it half an hour after a feed before bathing a baby, as they would be more likely to be sick due to being shaken about whilst bathing, so possibly you will have to bin the GF routine for now! DS is sicky - and can be amazingly projectile. As long as the majority of feeds are kept down, except for a bit of possetting, and your DD puts on weight, being sick is regarded as a nuisance rather than worrying. However if she vomits up most of the next feed (which she almost probably won't) then you might want to speak to NHS Direct/go to the GP tomorrow just in case.

Hi kbaby, how old is your dd? I did a rough kind of GF, but I thought that when they were little she had a feed at 5ish and then a bath at 6? How long does your dd feed for?

GeorginaA · 08/06/2004 19:55

kbaby - I've found that it's really important to keep that 5pm feed short (I think GF says 20mins?) so that everything has settled well by the six o'clock bathtime. I know it's tempting to let them feed longer if they're into it, but it's not long to the next "proper" feed (6.15) - it's just supposed to be a little "snack" to get them through the bathtime.

That said, ds2 is a possetty little wotsit too

Kbaby, my ds2 gets through one bib per feed. He I think he has a touch of reflux but gaviscon didn't work so I think he will grow out of it. I only very loosely follow GF ( very loosely) I would probably wait a while after she has been fed before bathing her. I wait for at least a couple of hours or if it is near bedtime, bath, bottle (mine bottle fed) and bed. Ds1 was sick not as much as ds2 but he grew out of it when he started weaning.

I keep that feed really short as well - keep ds off teh breats after he's spat it out once. If I don't keep him upright for at least 10 mins after each feed I am very likely to be projectile vomited all over - he has such explosive wind.

Thats the thing I fed her at 5pm and she only feeds for 10 minutes anyway so I just fed her for 5 mins and then after the bath she fed again for 10 minutes. She did the same on thursday night and that time I hadnt fed her before the bath. DP thinks he may be too rough with her in the bath or she could be swallowing some of the water.
