how much milk do other 20 months olds drink?

Just curious really. Dd, 20 months, drinks around 7oz of full fat cow's milk three times a day. Does that sound pretty average? I keep wondering if I should cut it down a bit, or why and when people do cut it down.

I have no idea how much mine drinks - one bottle at am and then another at night????

Iwouldnt worry

nutcracker · 07/06/2004 20:37

My 18mth old has 8oz in the morning and 8oz at bedtime.

If she is eating all her meals o.k then i wouldn't worry about cutting it down.

LIZS · 07/06/2004 20:40

dd has up to 4 oz 3 or 4 times a day - probably averaging around 12 in total. She's 2 3/4 and significantly upped her intake about a year ago having not really been interested previously. ds had about 6 oz am and pm until he stopped altogether at 3.

strangerthanfiction · 07/06/2004 20:50

Well, actually she's not a massive eater. Her milk is all she has for breakfast apart from maybe a yoghurt OR half a slice of dry toast. She then doesn't have milk until after her lunch / afternoon sleep but doesn't snack in the afternoon really at all. Then she usually has a good tea followed by final burst of the white stuff. Maybe I should cut out / down the afternoon tot?

My ds (26 mths) has been drinking about 800ml total since he was 1 year old. That's about 1 and a half pints, I think. He eats a good amount too and drinks a lot of water.

maomao · 07/06/2004 21:01

Hullo stf, I thought this might be a thread of yours! I think it's good that your dd is drinking that much milk, considering that she isn't really keen on some of her solids.

codswallop · 07/06/2004 21:02

I cant beleieve you lot measure it!

carlyb · 07/06/2004 21:04

my ds is similar age and has a 9oz bottle in the morning and one at night.
I craftily add milk to some of his meals!!

He used to have one in the afternoon - but I realised it was filling him up so he was not eating very well. Hence why I cut it out.

clary · 07/06/2004 22:17

I'm with Coddy on this one, I have not much idea...err, a cup with b/fast (4-6oz??) and another at bedtime, maybe another with a meal or maybe water depending...baby is only 14mo as well but I've long since stopped calculating. Actaully never did that 8oz bottle thing as i was lucky enough to be able to fully bf him till 10mo. STF, if your dd is not a great eater, she might be filling up on milk. If you want her to eat more food you could cut down the milk and offer water at one meal perhaps?

morocco · 07/06/2004 23:02

absolutely none at all which realy worries me - he just refused about 3 months ago and has stuck to his guns - not with strawberry/chocolate/hot/cold/honey/any other permutation of milk you can imagine
so you're all doing really well

Pidge · 08/06/2004 09:06

Dd is 22 months - she still has a breastfeed in the morning in which I imagine she gets virtually nothing these days! Then she has some milk on her cereal or porridge for brekky, and then we offer her 4-5 oz in the evening, and sometimes she drinks it, sometimes she's not interested at all.

Don't think it matters at this age - I guess if they're getting lots of milk and not interested in solids I would cut down a bit on the milk.

muddaofsuburbia · 08/06/2004 09:16

don't measure it either - ds (21mths) has whatever amount it takes to cover 2 weetabix. He's not interested in milk as a drink having previously had about a pint a day - just gave up all of a sudden and pushes any suspicious looking white stuff away..."no mick mummeee"

It's not so much that I 'measure' it as that the cup she drinks from has a measuring scale on the outside so I get to see. I think it's roughly a pint a day. She definitely substitutes breakfast with milk but then she's not interested in morning eating, she wasn't even when b/f, it would be her worst feed of the day. I never give her milk before or during lunch, just a bit when she wakes from her post lunch nap, and then again after her tea before bed so I don't think she's too full of milk to eat. But maybe if I cut out her afternoon drink she'd have a snack instead.

Hi,

My dd who is also 20 months, has 8oz milk mid afternoon and about 10-12oz before bed, she was having milk in the morning but cut that out as she wasnt having breakfast. She just loves her milk.

Tetley · 08/06/2004 22:09

Mine has a bottle when he waks up in the morning, and one before bed, and often one in the day when he wakes up from his nap. Not sure how much that'll add up to - probably about a pint.

strangerthanfiction · 09/06/2004 10:07

Hmmm, Joanne, I'm wondering if I should at least cut down on dd's morning milk as she never eats any breakfast.

stf, I found that if I gave ds1 milk first thing in the morning he wouldn't eat breakfast, so I started to swap them round (breakfast first then bottle before morning sleep) quite early on - maybe 7/8 months. I'm still quite careful not to give him loads of milk before breakfast (he's now 2.5) as he would happily fill up on it and then not want any food.

strangerthanfiction · 10/06/2004 13:34

Yeah, elliott, I think you may be right, I'm going to withold the milk until she has parted her little pink lips for some food first ...
