Is a bf baby with a mother who smokes ,better off than one who is not bf at all?

I've been wondering that for a while.

A friend of a friend has just had a baby (last week)and she's bf. She also smokes.

Do you think that the benefits of breast feeding outweigh the fact that she smokes? She was smoking outside by the way.

I genuinly don't know the answer to this. Also does the smoke get into the milk?
I know she will be breathing smoke onto and around him when she comes back inside but will the chemicals actually be in the milk?

I don't want to cause a huge row but just wondered which would be best for the little baby.

Some people 'stink' of perfume and products and B.O. but no-one would consider banging on about that as being detrimental to the baby's health.

yes i agree with that kama but to put formula in the same bracket as smoking is just wrong.

Hmm,Kama I think you will find there is a correlation between formula feeding and cot death. That is not to say that it causes it however.
A m/w once explained to me what she said was the prevalent view amongst m/ws for the main reasons for cotdeath.
Fascinating.

seriously moondog - ive never heard that

becaroo · 28/01/2007 19:19

Spidermama...just cannot believe that people really think that formula feeding is as "bad" as smoking. Am genuinely shocked.

becaroo another total non sequ'. (Can't spell the real word
I never said that. Nor anything remotely like it.

jampot · 28/01/2007 19:21

im assuming we're talking about tobacco here - what about spliffs and the like

Spidermama · 28/01/2007 19:22

I smoked a few spliffs (tobacco free) when pg with dd1 and then when bf-ing. I feel fine about it tbh.

Thought moondog equated the two??.....Like I said, I realise to bf or not bf is a contentious issue, but anyone can read the back of a packet of cigarrettes and work out that its not a great idea to be putting those chemicals in your body or those of your children. Surely? Perhaps the issue should be why arent more mothers given more help to give up smoking post-natally? So much emphasis is on ante-natal non smoking, it puzzles me.

moondog · 28/01/2007 19:28

Would you class alcohol as a drug Kama?
