my ds is 13 weeks and has hidden reflux. we have tried him on enfamil and he was very sick and constipated on it. we tried sma and he was constipated and seemed uncomfortable but was never actually sick - he just was very jerky. now on aptimil and he seemed to like the taste at first drinking 7 oz which is unheard of but now thats tapered off and he is jerky again. should i try farleys or cow and gate next? mentioned Nanny to the HV with a view to getting it prescribed (its 3 times the price of sma) but she wouldn't saying that doctors are not keen on it coz it doesn't have enough calories. someone , please advise me on what i should do next - i hate to see him so uncomfortable

Issy how many kcals per 100ml feed does your aptimal contain?

gloworm · 31/05/2004 20:41

what i meant was I have a tin of Nanny here and I could compare the number of calories (and any thing else) for you (am a nutritionist)

are you sure your hv knew you meant nanny FORMULA and not nanny MILK? my hv had never heard of it and though i was going to give ds regular goats milk. she has since aggreed that ds is thriving and healthy and the formula worked well for him.
this year she was quite happy for us to use nanny with second baby.

Issy, ds had very bad reflux and was really struggling to keep anything in, the ENT doctor recomended gaviscon for babies (can only get it on prescription) but, appart of the hassle in preparing it, we noticed that it made burping impossible causing him colic and constipation, at the end what worked best was aptamil and keep him in a semi-sitting position for about an hour after feeding (it takes a lot of time but after a couple of months the thing improved by itself). By the way, we noticed that Cow and Gate constipated him so badly that he used to cry himself to poo, Farleys was better but the best in DS case was aptamil, as soon as we started using it, constipation disapeared for good.

issywoo · 31/05/2004 23:17

chandra, ds is on 2 sachets of gaviscon per feed and when i didn't add it to a feed of sma last week he was very uncomfortable and was sick so i went back to using it. will try aptimil without the gaviscon tomorrow morning and see if he can keep it down - really good suggestion. if not then i won't go for c&g but maybe try farleys
gloworm, not sure about the calories - will look in the morning and let you know. do you get the nanny on prescription? i can't afford £7.65 for 450g which only lasts 2 days. i think my doctor thinks i'm a right pain coz i keep telling them what to prescribe..........

issy, i live in ireland, so different rules as regards prescriptions etc(its equivalent of £45 just to see the GP!!!)
we pay for nanny with child benefit. each month we buy 3 tins (900g tins are better value than smaller tins).
let me know when you find out about calories.

Issy, what about Omneo Comfort made by Cow and Gate? It's a thicker formula and is recommended for babies who suffer from colic or reflux. We used it for our DD's colic and it really did the trick. The only down side is that it may make your little one have less frequent bowel movements but as far as easing discomfort - it's absolutely great. Our HV recommended it for us and we were very happy with it. We moved onto Aptimal after a couple of months on the Omneo and she's been fine ever since.

issywoo · 01/06/2004 22:48

enfamil is like omneo i think - basically thickened with corn starch so you can't shake it but rather you have to roll it between your hands. enfamil made ds schreech when he pooed and there were really hard lumps so i have steered clear of the really thick formulas. have noticed he seems better if the milk is quite warm unlike dd who would have it straight from the fridge....
we're going on holiday next week to spain for 2 weeks so am going to have to carry all the milk with us (good thing i'm too fat to fit into my summer clothes so that i can use my baggage allowance on milk, gaviscon and bottles!).
does any one else have an opinion on farleys?

gloworm, sorry for the delay - we had chucked out the aptimil packaging and were using the milupa tub so i had to go to the supermarket to get a new box! the calories per 100 ml is 67 kcal - what is it for nanny?
have noticed that ds is quite snotty - could that be a cows milk allergy?

Issywoo, I don't think that the aptamil by itself will "stay down" but it may help with constipation. We got a rocker (bouncing craddle) to sit DS after his meals and it certainly did the trick. However he was only prescribed a sachet of gaviscon per feed so I suppose his reflux was not as severe as your ds's.

Have you asked your doctor about reducing the amount of gaviscon bit by bit so you can find the right amount? We went from 1 sachet to zero little by little, and once we got the rocker we forget about the gaviscon.

gloworm · 03/06/2004 07:54

issy, the calories per 100 ml is 69 kcal for nanny formula (so is 2 kcal higher! my GP and hv also have lots of misconceptions on the nanny formula). if you want any more info just ask.

yes, allergy to cows milk can cause problems like blocked snotty nose, its usually one of the main signed of the allergy. He may be allergic to all dairy products, but many people are just allergic to cows milk and fine with goat/sheep milk.
Definately sound like Nanny would be worth a try. I know its expensive but you could try a large 900g tin (better value) and see how it goes from there.

issywoo · 03/06/2004 20:13

i bought a tin today but the chemist only had 400g for £7.95 - how much is a 900 tin?
he's had one feed so far and ds lapped it up and burped immediately (on aptimil it was a struggle to burp him with all his lurching around, i also found he hiccuped a lot on aptimil) so i just need to see if his snotty nose disappears and if he seedms less refluxy too.
am seeing the doc on tuesday - how am i best phrasing it with him so that he feels inclined to prescribe it? dh doesn't think we can afford that kind of expense each week.
can't believe the HV dissed it - why are health professionals so against it?

OP posts:
gloworm · 04/06/2004 06:30

issy, since we opened our shop a few years ago, we have found most health professionals (in our area anyway) to be against alternative remedies...surely they should be positive about anything that may be good for you. perhaps its simply a case of gp's not having enough time to keep up with all thats happening.

glad the nanny seems to be going down well with your ds.
i'm afraid i cant answer you questions as i live in ireland so dont know what u can/can't get on prescription in uk.
also don't know price of nanny in uk. i can tell you that the 900g tin is more than twice the size of a 400g tin, but NOT twice the price.

if your GP is already prescribing formula for you, suely he wont care which formula he is writing the prcrription for?
if you do have to pay for it, maybe its cheaper online? or maybe alternate between nanny and a cheaper one?

tiktok · 04/06/2004 13:45

There are only some formulas allowed to be on prescription in the UK - I don't know if Nanny is among them, but I rather doubt it. Docs can prescribe soya formula and I think some of the other speciality lactose-free or hyperallergenic stuff, but not Nanny.

gloworm · 04/06/2004 19:52

issy you might find this thread on allergies interesting, its quite long, i've only read the messages from the last couple of days on it. Aero mentions getting goats milk on prescription (not sure if she meant formula or milk)
