When to stop breastfeeding?

ds is 10 months old, I'm thinking of stopping bfing. Just wondered what other people's experience was? (and picking brains of people who've actually done the research )

I never co-slept....it just didn't appeal to me. Ovulation can be suppressed by lactation, but it dpends how much and how ften and is an inprecise thing...never rely on it for conraception !

Skibump. In theory your periods should come back (I think) when your lo has more than 4h between feeds and when the night feed falls away. However if you'd ask around on MN there really doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when they come back!
With DS, who fed every 2-3h day AND night I got them when he was 16 weeks (coinciding with 1st solid feed, back then recommended between 4-6m). I was home full time and therefore able to feed him whenever he wanted.
With DD my periods didn't come back until she ws 10m. But she fed every 4h AND slept through (10-5) from 3 weeks! With her I also started my full time training and so I only fed her in the mornings, when I got back home and at bedtime from when she was 5.5m.
So my periods stayed away longer with the baby that fed less. Doesn't make any sense But hey that's nature: totally unpredictable
I also want to say that it'd be a shame to stop bf just to see if your periods would come back. A friend of mine caught straightaway with her ds and has now been trying for a year for a next baby. So even if you're ovulating: you just don't know how long it would take this time for you to get pregnant.
Whatever happens to you. I wish you all the best and hope you're in luck soon.

Thx belgianmama, and everyone for sharing personal experiences. Looks like whatever the theory, everyone's experiences are different. One of the reasons why MN is so good I think I'll just treat bfing ds and trying for #2 as being completely unrelated!
